    Maiden wins...........

#8 Maiden defeated #3 Cherryville 3-2 to win the conference tournament championship. They have now won 3 out of the last 4 meetings! Jennifer Hendricks hits a two-run HR and was an excellent game to watch. Good luck to both squads in the 1A State playoffs!

    North Buncombe 3 - Erwin 1

Good defense on both sides. Strong pitching by West and Manns.
Hits were scattered amongst the line up for NB. Bush had 2 hits.
Erwin had 3 singles from West and a double from Erin Morrow.
Great game by both teams. Great sportmanship always when these two teams play. It is soo cool to see friendships are what really counts when its all over. Awesome seniors from Erwin..

NB finished 21-2 overall and 15-1 in the MAC.
I don't know Erwin's overall but I think they ended 10-6 in conference.

    NORTH BUNCOMBE - ERWIN

I have to agree with Hawks08. Although Erwin took the loss, both teams were winners both on and off the field. Strong friendships have formed through the years. When Lauren West looked up at Manns father and said "I'll miss you"....we knew what it was all about. Good luck to the seniors and can't wait to hear about the exciting adventure that lies ahead for you.

    Enka vs Reynolds

Enka pulled out a close one. 6 to 5. in the bottom of the 7th.

Reynolds starting pitcher Janelle (nellie)Trifon pitch 5 innings before giving way to Amy Huntley and was leading 5 to 0. Nellie is just a special person. You may think that I am referring to her athletic abilities which are immense but just the character of this young lady is to be commended. She is the type of player anybody would want on their team because she is smart as well as athletically gifted...

I am not trying to single out Nellie above anybody else because there are some great ballplayers on Reynolds team. I can't go without talking about Dana Burton as well....Great young lady as well as a gifted player as well.

I know I am talking about Reynolds and my daughter plays for Enka but to talk too much about Enka or my daughter would come across as bragging or arrogant and I will leave that to other people to discuss good or bad. But, I am a diehard Enka fan and love Enka softball...

    Loaded...again

If what we saw from Enka in the ACR game is a predictor of the future, they have a lot to look forward to. Next year on the mound Tim Miller will have junior, junior and sophomore. As quickly as softball is improving hereabouts (quickly catching up with the rest of the state), that's the type of pitching a team will need to advance through the season and the playoffs, not to mention capturing a state title at the Final Four. By next spring, Katie B will have completely healed and I wager better prepared for the season, Amber B will have benefited from her experience this season and Sara S will be coming into her own as a top-quality hurler, too. Plus, all three are also good hitters! Next year Enka should have strong senior leadership, speed galore and experience. If they come up short on anything, it will most likely be a big stick to consistently rock the fences, or fly over them altogether. But then again, with that speed, pitching and experience...swoosh, there go the Sugerjets!

2A will be very interesting...but more on that later. For now, let's just say that it will be a pleasure to see Shannon Harris (West) and Sara Burnette (Owen) lock up again. Those two provided fans with three of the very best games in WNC HS softball this season. Great fun!
