after reading the "top contenders thread" and some of the comments about softball practice drills, i was wondering what level, if any, of supervision coaches need.

here's my thought ... many coaches know their sport very well. but they are NOT always great with conditioning ... i heard of a coach who paired his players up by weight and had them running piggy-back races on the basketball court. what kind of drill is that? as mr. rogers might ask the neighborhood, "can you spell LAWSUIT?"

sometimes a coach needs an assistant, a mentor, an AD or a parent to inject some common sense into these situations.

Our Practices at Butler are always open and we usually have at least a few parents watching .
Trust me if we did anything that in the least that was thought to be over the line. There would be letters and E-mails on the AD's desk the next morning.

glad to hear that some "oversight" occurs. giving anyone carte blanche is probably a recipe for trouble.

    supervision

I enjoyed the comment by 75gitane; most Coaches know the sport very well, huh? Being that this a softball message board, I have to disagree, most HS Softball Coaches in NC do NOT know the game. I totally agree that most practices should be open and anyone should be able to watch. There is always a need to work on plays that the practice needs to be closed, and I don't believe that parents need to come unless their Daughter feels there is a need for a parent to be there. Come on parents, get a life! Let your girls have their own life! If something wrong is going on at a practice, give the Coach a chance to defend themselves first, another words, follow the chain of command!

There are alot of the high school coaches that should not even be out there. Many of the girls know more than the coach themselves. I'm sorry but most of the high school coaches don't have a clue and the middle schools are even worse. Don't get me wrong there are some realy good ones out there but they are few and far between
