Here we go...Daniel Bard 20th round by Yankees.

Clearly, Mudcat was right. I don't know why the Yankees even wasted that pick knowing Daniel was not going to go in that selection.....but they do have the money...maybe they are willing to do something someone else might not

If Daniel is as quality a kid as his younger brother Jared, which I am sure he is, all this is a moot point because great things will be ahead for both of these youngsters...

My guess is there is already some negotiating going on. I doubt they would have wasted the pick unless they thought they had a shot at pulling something off. There is a lot of talent there.

Teams don't want to skip a round ... If you skip a round you can't re-enter in later rounds.

There might not be a player you want to take in the 20th ... so you draft someone you know you can't sign. It keeps your options alive for later rounds. When you finally get around to doing later round drafts, you can offer them less money (30th-35th).

The Pro's probably thought they couldn't get Mr Bard pried away from UNC. Why waste an earlier round pick if that's the case.

If I remember, Kunta was a late signee this spring to a J.C.....

That really opens up his options for getting drafted in subsequent years. Using he JC/Community College route, a player may be drafted after HS, Freshman year of JC, sophomore year of JC and then the junior and senior years of college.

Don't be too surprised if there are a lot of "Draft and Follow" guys that are J.C. bound in the late rounds. They let him go off to J.C. and then sign him, if he pans out on that level, right before next year's draft.

You end up getting a little better money with a draft & follow than with just going with a late round pick.

The middle rounds are usually full of college players who are out of options .... their career is over in college, they don't have to be paid much money (where are they going to go to play) and they are safe picks.

The H.S. players are heavy in the first 3 rounds and then again later in the draft, particularly day #2.
