CMS AD Budgets / Providence HS coaching vacancy

I heard that Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) have told HS AD's that they have ZERO bucks in the upcoming fiscal year for their athletic budgets. Is this correct? How could this happen? First coaches don't get paid squat and all are paid the same (in CMS at least) and cannot be supplemented by booster club activities. Then they don't give them a dime to keep up the equipment and facilities. So on top of the responsibilities for our young men and women, coaches have to go scrounge for dollars? This is sick. Why would anyone want a public school coaching position in Charlotte??

Now I also heard (note RUMOR ONLY) that the broken down Providence HS machine had 3 outstanding guys interviewing for the head baseball coaching position: Demming from MP; Derrick Graham from Charlotte Christian and Mike Hennessey from Providence Day. All 3 are OUTSTANDING men and excellent baseball guys. If the rumors are partly true, the Panthers will get a head coach with character AND baseball knowledge. And holy cow, with all the talent they have feeding the school, they could be a championship power again. What else (rumors / insight) can be shared on the ROCK?

Squid -- tell us more about coaches Graham and Hennessey -- I'm not familiar with either.

I agree Deming would be a great choice, but any theory on why Deming would leave Myers Park for Providence?

Also add one more name from the rumor mill who I hear is a top candidate -- Danny Hignight from South Meck. I think Higgy would be a fine choice. Very young, but a bright future. He can really motivate players.

Finally, with what I have heard from East Meck folks about what has happened to the East Meck home attendance zone and the resulting declining numbers in the East Meck program, why wouldn't a powerful school like Providence go after Coach Greason?

Derrick Graham would make an excellent Varsity Coach. He is a person of excellent character and experience. Played some triple A ball in the reds organization I believe, works well with young men, demanding with excellent knowledge of the game. He's done some work with the Megastars as well. He has a personal training background as well- strength & agility focused. Married with two great kids.

    Providence HS coaching vacancy

hennessey is the JV coach @ Providence Day. A real baseball guy, 110% committed to the best interests of his players. His summer teams have won AABC several years and played competitively in regionals & superregionals and his current crop won AAU states. He's can be intense but not a screamer. He holds players accountable and they know where he stands. He will get the most out of the hand he is dealt. Quality guy.

greeson is a natural speculation though I have not heard his name mentioned in the interviewee mode, but then again what does a squid know? I can tell you he has built a teriffc facility @ East and experienced winning years with some good talent. His feeder program was MARA, crestdale MS and mcclintock MS. MARA is now split betwixt Butler and providence. (BTW: this year's East vs Providence matchups, were essentially Matthews American vs Mathews National LL all-stars 5 yrs ago) So from a "future" perspective, he seems to be in a more challenging corner. We'll get to see his coaching skills over the next few years as the talent pool thins. This coming year could still be good if East shores up its pitching past Buchannon. All in all, though, he would seem to be a natural candidate.

But I still wonder why anyone would take a CMS job as other than a stepping stone. The headaches are enormous!

To me having any of the above choices is a HUGE jump from last year. Neville (sp?) wasn't the greatest coach in the world but he always had the kids interest at heart and was learning, kids seem to like playing for him. Horniack on the other hand, well you guys know the story and have heard the rumors and yes they are true. Can't wait to hear who they choose, anything looks great at this point. Also not sure why Deming would leave MP, they are getting that place in great shape. But we would love to have him!!!!!!!

Derick Graham would be an excellent choice for the Providence head coach job. He has the experience as a player and coach. He is involved in the Megastar program as head coach of the U16 team. Don't know their record but do know they have several tournament wins this summer. He is a class guy and any program that lands him will excel.

Danny Hignight would be an excellent choice also, Coach Bagwell states " Danny is the best hitting coach in the State"......since hitting was a problem last year, I'll bet he could turn it around.

I actually liked Matt Neville, obviously he made some personal mistakes, but he was beginning to do some good things over on Hwy 51

It was made public on Friday, 7/25, that Daniel (Danny) Hignight, assistant coach at South Meck, has been given the head baseball coaching job at Providence High for the 03-04 baseball season.

Coach Hignight, and his wife Annissa, came to South Meck and Charlotte recruited by Hal Bagwell from Boone, NC and the Watauga coaching staff. Coach Hignight has been the hitting and catching instructor at South Meck for the last 3 South Meck baseball seasons as well as a PE and Health teacher at South Meck.

Coach Hignight attended Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Physical Education. He was the 1997-2000 assistant coach and hitting instructor on the Watauga team that won 3 consecutive NW4A conference Championships, a feat never before accomplished. During this time Coach Hignight developed 20 collegiate players and 11 that played at a Division 1 level. While a hitting instructor at Watauga, 8 offensive school records were set. In 1996 Coach Hignight competed in JCCA Regional.

Congratulations to Coach Hignight on his most recent career move from South Meck as an assistant coach to Providence as a head coach but...he will be dearly missed at South Meck by all his players and parents.
