    1. format was initial pool play w/ 34 teams
    2. top 2 from each pool went fwd; bottom 2-3 went to a consolation bracket
    3. the bottom 4 of the top 10 played for the last 2 slots of the final 8
    4. losers of the final 8 went to the 5-8 bracket; winners to 1-4 bracket

Teams were from CT to Utah to TX and east.

the final 4 teams were, man for man, superior to the rest of the field and should have been there; the final 4 were teams characterized by cherry picked players (big, strong & fast) from a wide geography. FLHitmen were from Tampa, Orlando, Jax, Cocoa as an example. GBC won "easily" over the Hitmen something like 7-3 in the final. GBC went on a rampage early, out 5, then 7 runs. The GBC pither took advantage of a wide strike zone and never put it over the middle of the plate leading to "colorful" reactions from fans as frustrated and non-adjusting Hitmen were stymied. No team went undefeated. GBC, E Cobb and Hitmen lost their very first game in the first round. A big flamethrowing lefty from CT beat E Cobb in the 1st round, never to be heard from during the remainder of the Tourney. There were some very good players but few that really, clearly stood out as "off the charts".

the 5-8 teams were solid clubs. Charlotte Diamondbacks wound up 6-3 for the tournament. They beat (what was eventually) the #6 team TNE in the second rnd on a beauty of a pitching performance by King (Piedmont HS) winning 2-0, but lost in the bottom of the 7th 4-3 in the first rnd of the final 8 (on a little overthrow to the pitcher from the catcher) in Space Coast Stadium (Expos) vs the eventual #5 team CT Titans.

FYI: the D'backs beat GBC as well as Carolina (Kernersville) Cardinals (I heard came in #2 in the USSSA nationals) for the NC AAU title a few weeks back. they are a solid team that can beat just about anyone on a given day, but not everyone all the time.

One other thing, the D'backs won the team sportsmanship award over all 34 teams. The tourn director said it was voted on based on the team, coach and fan character / behavior.

Simpsonville SC (SC AAU champs) didn't make it to the top 10.

I didn't see the #9 Richmond Cty Rockies (except at Ron Jon) but they must be solid getting to the final 10.

All in all, with GBC, D'backs, Rockies and Cards doing well in nationals, NC was well represented in the 15U age bracket. Then, when you take into acct the 16U On Deck O's (which are basically all 15 yr olds) it looks like a good crop of baseball kids.
