I am getting quite an education but would greatly appreciate some advice from all of you knowledgable folks. Since I am just learning some of what we should be doing to play college ball, I can tell we have missed some very valuable opportunities and I would like not to miss nay more.

My son is RHP graduating 04. Play Americal Legion ball for post 297. Played at impact showcase this summer however he pitched 8 2/3 innings the night before the showcase for Post 297 and therefore could not pitch in the showcase i.e. he did not get any exposure

Receive invitation to play at Blue Grey Classic in Winter Haven, however his fall team (GRFBL - Ken Shue's team) has their opening games this weekend so he cannot attend this showcase. Did not know that there were other Blue Grey showcases we probably should have attended

Bottom line he has had very little exposure. Any advice on what steps, activities etc we should undertake?

There is an Impact Showcase event for "Unsigned Seniors" on Sunday, 11/9 @ UNC-Wilmington that you can talk to Andy Partin @ Impact Baseball about. See www.impactbaseball.com.

There is a Blue-Grey Showtime - December 6 & 7, 2003 (at Jack Russell Stadium, Clearwater Florida--Spring Training home field of the Philadelphia Phillies).

The 3rd Annual Showtime Showcase will feature seniors who did not sign in the early signing period and underclassmen looking to start the recruiting process.

    See www.impactprospects.com.

And, if your son/player is not on a fall showcase team, you need to get him on one?!?

Send your son's fall baseball schedule and a fact sheet about him...immediately...to each school in which he has an interest. Since time is of the essence, select schools which are realistic objectives, both academically and athletically. Cover each schedule and fact sheet with a personalized letter (from your SON) telling each program why they are of particular interest to him.

With the level of visibility given the Greater Raleigh Fall Baseball League, the ones that are looking for players whose qualifications match your son's will make a point of coming to see him play.

Additionally (but, not as a substitute for the personalized letters), you might ask Coach Shue to put a phone call into the two or three schools that are at the top of your son's list. If that's impractical, have your son pick up the phone and call them after they've had a chance to receive his correspondence. A perfect time is a week or so before he's scheduled to pitch, so that he can "remind" them of that.

Finally, make every effort to attend Impact Baseball's Unsigned Seniors Showcase. If it happens to conflict with one of his team's games, let Coach Shue know now that he'll have to miss that game.

Best of luck to your son!

Thank you for all of the information. My understanding is that Ken Shuey's team is a showcase team. His mission statement for the team is The “Major” league of the GRFBL exists for the purpose of giving players exposure to college coaches and professional scouts. From past parents of players on the team, they say Shuey does a really good job of this. I just know now that time is limited and we cannot let any other opportunities pass him by

Again Thanks so much for all the good information!!

Also, you can use the High School Baseball Web @ http://www.hsbaseballweb.com/ for the high school recruiting process as a reference as well.

    exactly prepster.

hsbbfan, check your private messages (user cp at the top of the page)

Make sure you give a full bio on physical traits too. Every kid in American can hit 400 with 10 Homers or go 10-0 pitching, college coaches don't care about stats too much (unless its something eye grabbing like 150 k's in 80 innings). Make sure you give Ht, wt, LEGIT radar readings, awards, 60 yard dash time, etc. Find out who the assistant is in charge of recruiting and send him a package and heartfelt letter. the head coach will not want to talk to you until a visit of signing, they have too much to do with the existing team so don't bother with them. Be realistic for who your son can play for. If he is 6ft and throws upper 80's, he is a Div1 prospect. If he is 5-10 and throws 80 at best, don't send anything to a major school. Last, if your kid can play, go up to a pro scout at a game and introduce yourself and ask him where he could fit in well. For that matter, ask the college scouts at games too, they like to see all kids that want to play a home. There are zillions of good options: Div 1, juco, naia, div II, pro, etc.

also, use politics. think of all your friends and what ties they have at all schools.

North Raleigh huh? Congrats on the season. Ya'll turned it on when it counted. Tough losses in Fayetteville. My roomate played with 297, ya'll definently took care of us to end our season (Cary Post 67). Good luck with the college search.
