As I was sitting in the dugout keeping a quality at bat chart, I saw where Greg Mangum was 3-3 with a walk in tonight's scrimmage and it hit me that I had not even mentioned him in my previous posts. I could not believe it. "Mango" is flat out nasty. All of the older guys have told me that he is the best second baseman in the ACC, and from what I have seen out of him this fall, I know why. The guy is awesome. He made a ridiculous play up the middle tonight on a hard ground ball hit up the middle by Mark Griffin. He makes things look so easy. I just thought I would update everyone on Greg and let you guys know how the best second baseman in the ACC and our lead off man is doing.

Oh yeah, and he is one of the nicest guys on the team.

I had somebody tell me this story from Coach Fox..." A shot was hit up the middle but was slicing right. I didn't believe Mangum had a chance to get to the ball. Not only he got to it, but because of the slice he actually overran the play. As he was twisting his body around to try to catch it, Greg snared it with his bare hand. .....the best play I have ever seen in baseball."

The kid is not only quick of foot, but is equally quick with his hands. Arguably, the best 2nd baseman in the country not being paid....and the kid has some pop in his bat too!!!

    GREAT INFO!!!!

As an instructor for many future college players, or guys that THINK they want to play collegiately, the updates on practice are GREAT!! Having coached collegiately at the D-2 and JUCO level I understand and empathize with you guys...still players want to hear these things from other players.....they think coach is building it up......we know better.

If any of you guys are ever in Greenville come see me at Triple Crown Baseball....it would be our pleasure to have you around!!

If any players are coming in for the fall tournament at ECU give me a call and we can arrange a place for you guys to get some cuts!!!!

    You bet!

Greg tried out for the senior state games team in 2000 for the West and was obviously overlooked as to his ability! Just goes to prove how tough those tryouts are as well as the cuts that follow! Like picking 20 gold needles out of a proverbial haystack! Over a 100 seniors and 90% of them can flat out play! I congratulate Greg for his success and hard work while persevering through this "minor" setback as in incoming frosh to UNC! Good luck in all his future endeavors... I would have enjoyed getting to know him and watch him in action...perhaps at the Hill in the next year!:D

Well said "O". Greg is worth the price of admission. Watch how he plays the game and you will know what I am talking about. Guys who have played with Greg for the past 3 years sit back in practice to this day and talk about how much fun it is to watch him play out there.
