Too soon to say...but a 4-0 beginning ain't bad. They should make the playoffs...how deep?...well, let's just say they are a pleasant surprise.

Starting to remain me of days(late 80/early 90) when they had all those great teams with Anthony "The Lizard" Houston and Tom Knotts and when the 3 best teams in Charlotte were all on the West Side(Harding/West Meck/West Charlotte). West Meck/Harding rival back then was awesome.

if i remember correctly, they have won two of those games because the opponent was unable to convert PAT's...that concerns me. With the new playoff format, i am sure that they will qualify...but i doubt that they are ready to compete with the likes of Independence and West Charlotte.

I did find it strange that Langston took the time to write this piece, but the paper did not send anyone to cover the game. i did not expect the same game write up as Independence or WC, but i did expect some follow-up story since they won the game.

    pcon,
The westside teams were very tough in the late 80's. the harding/WC games were always the biggest, but the harding/WM rivalry was right there. also, Liz was a great athlete...but he was not the QB of HHS's best team of that era...that was the season following his graduation.

I remember the old Tri-County 4A days when Crest had to play very good Harding teams led by Tommy Knotts. But watching Ray Durham play baseball back then was the best. He hit a game winning homer off of one of my best friends. It was classic.

    smash...
the good ole tri-co-4a...i remember those days well. jonathan byers had 300+ yards rushing in boiling springs one night...and that was in the days when Liz was qb. we have struggled for a long time now...and it is good to see them winning more than they lose.

ray was fun to watch...and still is. i am pulling for th phillies to make the wild card so i can make the 2 hour drive down to see him play in the division series there.

Decisions about the games have to be made in advance. We cannot cover all games and I can see why you might assume we would cover it. But looking back on it, if it were totally my call, and it isn't, I probably would've had reporters at the games we did.

    langston,
i understand that decisions are out of your hand...i was not criticizing you...merely the paper's decision to not cover that game and follow up a story that you did. as a graduate of HHS, i am a little biased, but i think i would have looked for a followup if the article were written about any other team in the area.

while i have got you...i have to take issue with with you saying that Ray Durham was the leader of the '88 championship baseball team. Ray was an incredible athlete (well, he still is) and he did a lot of great things for that particular team. But i think that the 6 senior starters on that team might take that blurb as a slap in the face. Incidentally, our ace pitcher on that team (Scott Tate) was NC 4A player of the year that season and got the win in games one AND three in the championship series with Rose. Without him, we don't even make the playoffs. He was the leader...and the rest of us...we just played our role. and if you asked him, i am sure that Ray would agree.
