The Charlotte Observer has an article on proposed re-alignment (which would begin next school year I believe). It makes for interesting reading since it uses school size (solely) for determining the conference divisions.

    (4A)

Independence, Myers Park, Providence, Vance, North Meck, East Meck, South Meck, Butler

    (4A/3A)

Hopewell, West Meck, West Charlotte, Garinger, Harding, Olympic, Waddell, Berry

I can't provide a link to their article since it requires you to enter a user-id and password.... You can go to charlotte.com and follow the prompts.

Though the proposed alignment does shorten some travel distances, it omits other growing schools in the area which could be considered for inclusion in a 4A conference, such as Ashbrook and East Gaston. No mention was made about what would happen to Central Cabarrus which is currently in the Meca8 but is surrounded by 3A and 2A schools.

My initial reactions is...I like it. It certainly promotes fairness and based on the schools you have mentioned...distance is not a big problem.

The only problem I am seeing with this, (speeking from a baseball stand point) is that in one conference you will have 6-7 possible play-off teams, and in the other there is maybe two. This means that you will end up with some very good teams being left out, while on the other hand you will have some very bad teams going. It's good for my school but I'm not sure about some of the others.

Guess we dont see eye-to-eye on much waddell, but i must disagree. I think this would be fantastic.

    1) Nobody likes playing teams of lower caliber and beating up on them, that is not baseball.

    2) I htink it would be great for teams who have had little success in the past few years, to having a chance to be in the playoffs.

    3) Here's where i disagree the most, yea some good teams will be left out, but how does that change the SW4A the past two years. I think a conference like this will only prepare teams more for the state playoffs. Yea a team will be left out, but they have to beat those guys to advance in the playoffs why not knock them off early.

Without being all that familier with the Charlotte schools, are there other sports that some of the weaker baseball schools are strong in? We sometimes here just consider baseball. The conferences might be better than at 1st glance.

In the mountains there could be a much better 2A conference formed. Based on the new numbers. WHC would be dropping Avery and Mitchell and picking up East Henderson and Smoky Mountain, still a nine team conference.

The MAC 3A would drop to a 7 team conference. Wow, what a battle for 3 playoff spots. TC Roberson, Tuscola, Franklin, Asheville, Erwin, Enka, and North Buncombe.

The realignment won't happen until the 05-06 school year (unless something really strange happens first). The ADM numbers may be a bit different by then.

It would be a lot more fun to redraw the conferences ourselves instead of having the NCHSAA do it. :D :D

Correct about it starting the 05-06 school year. But this years numbers will be used. New conferences will be assigned for the 05-06 school year this spring (spring 04).

    4A Realignment Numbers

The new 4A brackets in the state will be built around these schools. There will be some mixed 4A/3A conferences also (Particularly down east). If you want to take the challenge of re-drawing some conferences, here's some fun for you.

The Big South 3A will be completely changed with both Ashbrook and East Gaston moving to 4A. That's probably the most intriguing change.
