A side note on Zach Phillips from Lee Co. He is something special; I've seen him throw BP with either hand. Surprisingly, he has control from the left side, but righty is where his zip is at.

I couldn't agree with you more drag bunt. I'm serious when I say that North Meck is the strongest in the Charlotte area. They really don't have any holes in their lineup.

Strong and deep pitching, good hitters, fast runners and experienced. I'm sure NC would find something to whine about ( we are only 7 deep in our pitching staff ), but in my opinion they are the team to beat.

MP proved last year that a "team" is more important than having the most talent. So, the top teams in the SW4A will have something to say during the playoffs...and Providence has a senior, talent laden team. Not many teams can boast of a starting pitching staff of Alex Martin, Joey Cutler, AJ Mason, Matt Foulk etc., etc....and they have the bats to match. Like the past three years, I'm interested in how they respond to their new coach.

you can't forget about alexander central this year. they should definitely be the favorite in the nw4a. keep in mind the only reason they weren't in the playoffs last year is because of their bench clearing brawl vs watauga. they beat south caldwell twice last year and basically bring everybody plus the addition bryan corbet.

Alexander Central will come out of the NW4A, followed by Watauga. North Meck. will take the Meca followed by nobody; they will walk away with the conference. Scotland will be real young this year so I look to Richmand to take the conference. In the SW4A South Meck. will win the conference due to great pitching, stealer defense and young intense hitters, plus a great coach from everything I hear, Butler, East, Myers Park, Olympic, and Providence will battle for the 2 and 3 spots. All I hear is that Providence is loaded, but who is the coach? Look for Greenville Rose to once again come out of the East; talent plus the winningest high school baseball coach in the state leads to success year in and year out.

Catamount36, I guess I'll have to ask Coach Welch about the honorable mention awards to find out how long they've been given out.

As far as other teams in the CPC, I don't think there will be any weak teams in the league this year. South Iredell has dropped out of the league. Davie played mostly sophomores and juniors last year so they will be much better this year. I don't have details on South Rowan or North Davidson, but I'm sure both teams will be very competitive. West Forsyth will be good too, but maybe not as strong as they've been the last few years. Dan Poindexter will be their stud pitcher (he's got a wicked fastball that tails in hard on right handed batters), but he's about it. A kid to watch that may end up on varsity as a freshman is Greg Holt. I saw him play for the Titans this fall and he was impressive on the mound - good fastball and a sharp breaking curve ball. He's also a good hitter. There is another freshman that will probably make varsity, but I can't recall his name! I'm told he played linebacker on the varsity football team this fall, so he must be an athlete. Next year West Forsyth will get the crop of kids that went to the Little League World Series two years ago from SouthWest Little League in Clemmons. So the future looks good for West Forsyth, but maybe not this year.

The coach is Danny Hignight. He lives, breathes, eats baseball 24/7. He has an impressive pedigree under tutelage of Pete Hardee @ Wautaga and Hal Bagwell @ South Meck. He will probably ruffle a few feathers initially at Providence, but when the kids buy into his system and the team wins consistently, he could build a dynasty.

It's a tough place to coach because they are always under the gun, but Coach Hignight has tough skin and a little stubborn streak which is imperative to coach there. He has them doing conditioning drills that they are not used to, but if the kids accept his methods and the team wins, he should be there a long time.

I'm pulling for him!!!...at least most of the time :)

Coach Higgy is one of the best hitting coaches in the state...he needs the support of the Providence parents, ADs, and Assistant Coaches. If the kids work hard and believe in Coach Higgy and his program, they will be a team to recon with.
