UNCC also made a big impression on many of the 04's on the region 6, gold medal team, i know of at least 4 that wanted to go there, and only one was signed. they recruited all during the summer, and then stopped during the fall. dont understand it

At the beginning of spring/summer season I and many of the players on my team were being recuited by UNCC. I felt if all of us went to UNCC it would be a great experience and we could add a lot to the team. My friend and I took an unofficail visit and saw a practices. We had already seen the school and its facilities and felt that our number one choice was UNCC and we would pull the trigger very soon. However, after we saw the practice the coaches said they would call us next week when they were allowed to due to the NCAA regulations. We waited one, two, three weeks without hearing anything. However we still felt interested and couldnt understand what was up. After about 1 1/2 months without hearing anything my HS coach gave them a call and was told by Coach Hibbs that they were no longer interested. Same thing went for my friend. We were really upset, not that they weren't interested, but that they coulc not pick up the phone and make a 5 minute call explaining they were not interested so we could pursue other options. It is disrespectful for a player to commit to a school and not call and let all other interested schools know he has already committed, however when an adult just leaves a player hanging like that, just seems a little unfair to the player. I have talked to other college coaches and they do not know what is going on with UNCC. Charlotte has probably one of the best baseball cities talent-wise on the East Coast minus some cities in FL. UNCC is just letting talent through their backyard. UNCC has a lot to offer, if you have ever seen the facilities, you know what I mean. I know that everyone on my team said they would love to go there, were not pursued by UNCC, and signed with other D1 schools such a Clemson, UNC, UNCA, Coastal, and Western. I am extremely glad that I did not end up going to UNCC, it just seems like they don't want to get better, because with the talent in Charlotte they certainly could.

Hardhitter--I'm sorry you felt the dark side of recruiting. You are right, a common courtesy phone call would have been nice. I have seen scouts from other schools "wine & dine" a recruit..back off, move on..then avoid any conversations with the parents even though they are attending the same games.

It is amusing when people discuss colleges as a great place to learn "life lessons" and then state that college athletics are run like a business. I can recall many times a college signed an athlete and stated that they aren't recruiting any more at his position, then signs others later at the same position....keep the best and let go the others. There is something fundamentally wrong with that picture, but it is happening far too frequently at many schools.

I would like to make one other comment about Coach Hibbs. There is a player on his team that has been injured and no assurance that the player would be able to play this coming year. Coach Hibbs told the kid, " Don't worry about your scholarship, I'm not going to take it away...you just concentrate on getting better and continuing your rehab". Now, many HC at a college wouldn't do that, but he did.

Sounds like a lot of players got the same treatment from UNCC. We had the same experience at our house. Of course there were other schools that did the same thing so you really can't single out UNCC for being hot on the trail of a player and then going cold. Sounds like it happens more often than not. I will say they that Coach Hall asked if he sent the most information, etc and when we told him no he was disappointed. Sending paper after paper during the junior year is just a way of keeping the school in the player's mind it doesn't mean the school is truely interested. They are just keeping options open.

I'm a long time reader, but this is my first time writing... please bear with me.

I think a lot of good points have been made but the basis of this thread may be a little off. I found the information below off of the shcool's websites. I just took the first 5 schools I saw off of Skilton's site.

    School..............Roster.........In State................% in state
    Charlotte.........30...............21..........................70%
    UNC.................35...............25..........................58%
    NCSU...............38...............16..........................42%
    UNCG...............31...............13......................... 42%
    UNCA...............27...............19......................... 70%
    Elon.................38...............22......................... 58%

Charlotte also has 9 players that live within an hour of the University area in Charlotte (best guess on their hometowns). That is about 30% of their roster. Last years recruiting class has garnered national attention and this years class includes 2 instate (1 from Charlotte) out of the 4 currently signed.

In my opinion, if you take them out of CUSA and put them in the Big South, Southern, CAA, etc. they become a 30+ win team each year based on what they have done vs. the elite of those conferences out of conference. The travel and the talent in CUSA has beaten them up in the past few years.

If Charlotte wins more, I think everyone will be please with their recruiting base. Again this is my 1st post so take it for what it is worth.

I have to agree with theDARKone, as well as the posts regarding this whole thing as being a two way street, player and university. It isn't always easy to reconcile yourself to the fact that there comes a point in every young man's career that his options become limited. Unfortunately, college coaches help make this a reality. UNCC probably recruits what they feel is D1, CONF USA talent, regardless of location. In fact, I know of two young men (1 at UNC, 1 at Clemson) that they recruited heavily 3 years ago that live within 45 minutes of the university. Don't make it personal, or wrong if the players you feel should be recruited and signed are not what the university is looking for/needs.

This thread has taken many twists and turns...and partly my fault.
My question was " Has UNCC suffered (lack of interest) because of not recruiting local players( meaning Charlotte and vicinity). Chris Taylor is the only one I can think of in the past few years and he is from Mount Pleasant.

Are there any kids from Charlotte that play for the CHARLOTTE 49rs? My point being, to gather local interest in a school program that competes with all the other Pro sports teams in the same city, wouldn't it be advantageous to sign players in your backyard.... I don't know exactly what the answers are, that's why I posted this thread.

    Adam Floyd - Shelby
    Michael Roane - Charlotte
    Randall Poplin - Monroe
    Julian Sides - Salisbury
    Matt Foard - Monroe
    Spencer Steedley - Salisbury
    Justin Rummage - Charlotte

These are the ones that I think are within an hour of the University. You will be able to add Taylor to that list next year.

Thanks for the info darkone...of the 2 Charlotte boys, I believe Roane signed out of HS elsewhere..he is a transfer from WCU.

But I agree, those are some good players signed by the 49ers. I believe this thread has gone it's distance and it's time to move on.

Thanks for all the great replies!!!

For comparison, here are Davidson's "local" players. I'm using one hour drive from campus as the benchmark.

    Ronnie Shore - South Rowan
    Brett Peiffer - East Rowan
    Eli Benefield - Huss
    Jay Heafner - West Lincoln
    Matt Dellinger - East Burke
    Rob Wilson - Myers Park

This is not too bad considering the Davidson applicant pool is a small fraction of Charlotte's pool.
