    Pitcher in the circle

Question for the softball gurus out there.

You have a pitcher in the circle with the ball. She is not fake throwing, she is not attempting to bait the runner, in fact she is not even looking at the runner. The runner is 6 feet of the base just standing there. How long does that runner have to get back to the base or try to take the next base before she is out??????????????????

Also what page is that rule located at in the 2003 or 2004 High Schoool rulebook?

I belive its supposed to be one second but that depends on the umps are paying any attention to the runner. I will get back to you with the page in the NCHSAA book if I can find it.

try www.nchsaa.unc.edu and the rules should be there.........but its up to the umpire as Dawgfan mentioned and its one second from my point of view during ASA summer/fall competition. I too will try to research this alittle later.......my paying job is calling NOW!! Good luck up there at Forbush!!!!

I believe once the runner stops she has to immediately go one way or the other. She can't stand there.

I've never seen this 'one second' rule but the runner must make her way back to a base immediately (could be a delayed steal) and not challange the pitcher by stopping or whatever. A steal would technically be a challange but actually she should be starting that before the pitcher receives the ball. I've never seen the rule but I've seen a couple called out for being slow about making their way back.

there is no 1 second rule. a runner either by taking a lead or rounding a base may stop once. after she must return or advance. the rule can be found on pages 68 and 69 in the nfhs rule book. the rule is located in rule 8 section7 art. 1-2-3
