    Providence @ Independence
    Myers Park @ South Caldwell

For those Charlotte people reading the boards, what are your views on the first round games? Which players should we be looking for to carry their team's offensive load? Thoughts, observations, Predictions from anyone...?

    mcdowell-reynolds

back in january when the lady rockets upset the lady titans in fairview I posted on this board that I believed that lose would help mcdowell become a better team and boy did they prove me right. They blew out the rockets in the rematch(by 15 ) and then last night when everything was on the line they easily won again.(by 9) This week will be a good one, reynolds should have no problem with hopewell, mcdowell beat them pretty easy in the christmas tourney at freedom. It should come down to another reynolds-mcdowell showdown. Good luck ladies.

    round 1

my thoughts on the 1st round games:
Many of the charlotte teams are not at full strength right now...Some due to injuries, some due to discipline. However, as always, the cream always rises to the top, and that is where Vance, Garringer, South Meck, and Independence find themselves.

Providence @ Dub-C......Losing a player of Granberry's caliber would cripple any team, and WC has had their season derailed. Even so, they still have more than enough firepower to run past this team........WC 64 Providence 47

Myers Park @ South Caldwell....MP has recovered well from last year's graduations and has gotten hot at the right time. Strong inside, and improving at guard, this could be an interesting matchup, IF it were a regular season game. Playoff pressure changes everything. Gotta go with home court advantage. South Cald 53 MP 39

Freedom @ Butler......Game really hinges on the status of Tate. For Butler, when Willis is hot, so are they, if she doesnt score, Butler doesnt win
    If Tate plays.......Freedom 50 Butler 38
If Tate is out........2 point game, toss a coin

Hopewell @ Reynolds.... Hopewell hit their stride in January, beating Vance, and taking our Lions to Overtime. But since then, have lost 2 starters because of ??? THe team is still good, but I dont see the team playing well in a hostile environment. Reynolds 64 Hopewell 55

That is a pretty bold statement on your part, Tony. I would love to see McDowell and Reynolds both in the regionals. If they were to make it that far, the NCHSAA would set it up to where they would meet in the regional final, but there are a lot of teams out there that may have a say in that...

These first round games should be interesting. I don't know much of anything about Providence or Independence, other than Indy has the tall girl that used to play at Myers Park (Owens). So, I don't know if I can make much of a prediction. Whoever wins, travels to Marion wednesday night to play McDowell. For the Lady Titans, if it is Independence, it will be interesting to see how the interior plays against Owens. Big girls have given McDowell problems this year.

Myers Park @ South Caldwell: Myers Park will be making the trip to Hudson to play in one of the loudest gyms in the west. The way the gym is laid out, the fans are almost on top of the court. I don't know how Myers Park will respond to the hostile environment, but it should be a good game between fairly equal seeds. South Caldwell has quite a few girls who can shoot the ball well, but their overall ballhandling skills is what kills them from time to time. MP might as well plan on playing an up and down type of game. Lots of 3's may be flying in the gym on Monday Night. Which teams shoots the better percentage will probably win.

Freedom @ Butler: I would like to call an upset here and go with Freedom, but there seems to be no team chemistry. The Lady Patriots are talented enough to beat Butler in Charlotte, but the way they have been playing lately, it's almost like they just wanna get the season over. Their best player, Tara Tate, will likely not play. The key to Freedom's success is how many open looks can Leah Barrier get. If she can get some open looks from behind the arc, she can easily put 25 on you. Butler would be well advised to play man-to-man the entire game. Freedom does have a size advantage over Butler. They sould try to exploit that, get the ball inside to Scruggs and draw some fouls and get to the line.

Hopewell @ AC Reynolds: This game will probably be the closest game of the evening. That would be hard to imagine with a #2 seed facing a #5 seed, but Reynolds is down a knotch right now, and is ripe for the upset. Reynolds lost a very tough game to McDowell last night, and to come back and play on Monday is going to be a true litmus test of how good Reynolds is. The Lady Rockets are also at less than 100 percent. One of their players is playing on a bad knee, but she's still out there playing as hard as possible. Hopewell is the type of team that loves to run and shoot. They have three different people that love to fire it up from outside. If they can keep the tempo up, it will be to their advantage. If Reynolds can keep it more half-court, they can pound it inside on Hopewell all night long.

bigdan, from what I remember, Owens was a guard on that Myers Park team wasn't she? Ranisha White was more the inside player I think. I could be wrong. Anyway, its not going to be an easy ride for the Lady Titans!

he's right, owens was the point guard for myer's park, white was inside big girl, and "red" anthony was the wing with attitude...

owen's handled the ball really well, and shot pretty well... she was a little hard to contain, but atkinson can go head to head with anyone, so it may be a different story... not sure if she is playing the 1 for indy, but she is their biggest scoring threat... i think mcdowell will match up fine with them...

owen's is good, but that probably won't be enough

South Caldwell over Myers Park tonight 71-49. The Lady Spartans came out of their shooting slump, and the Spartan crowd was the loudest and best ever! Good luck NW4A teams!
