Got a huge suprise in the All Conference race...Sydney Alexander was named Conference player of the year over Anna Atkinson even though Atkinson got more votes...? That is pure BS, not to slight how much Alexander meant to Reynolds, but without Anna, McDowell would not be playing for a state championship on Saturday. Here is the list of the all conference team.

Note: there is not a first and second team, the top ten votes make one all conference team.

Coach of the Year: Art Snead (Reynolds)
Player of the Year: Sydney Alexander (Reynolds)

    Anna Atkinson (McDowell)
    Emily Lovik (McDowell)
    Akendra Brown (McDowell)
    Alex Thompson (Reynolds)
    Ashlei Helton (East Burke)
    Leah Barrier (Freedom)
    Heather Pritchard (South Caldwell)
    Jessica Woodie (South Caldwell)

    Honorable Mention:

    Aimee Kiser (McDowell)
    Katie Rybacki (Reynolds)
    Brittany West (East Burke)
    Brittany Bolick (Watauga)
    Jessie Hodges (Watauga)
    Kenya Miller (Alexander Central)

Okay just curious...where did you find out about all this above? And how did Anna get more votes but didn't get player of the year? When did it come out?

Yeah good ? reyonoldsrocks23.....but bigdan here is my 2 cents, why get all fired up about this...just a little reminder that your team is playing for the state championship on Saturday, and if I were you I wouldn't be upset about this cause I think thats way more of an honor than any POY. Just get ready for Saturday bud and realize how huge that is not a who got what title.

It seems to have gotten the attention of coach Mike Silver. Here's a portion from the article:

    _______________________________

McDowell head coach Mike Silver was upset Atkinson didn't receive the award.

"I feel like it's a slap in the face to Anna and a slap in the face to our program," said the 29th-year head coach. "I'm not taking anything away from Sydney; she's a great player. But as far as an all-around player, there's not anybody around here as good as she (Atkinson) is."

Atkinson, who plays nearly every minute of every game, averages 13.1 points, 8.0 assists and 6.1 steals per game for the Lady Titans. She had two triple-doubles this season and was close to achieving the feat numerous other times. Atkinson passed both the 1,000-point and 500-assist marks this year. She was named the NW4A tournament MVP for the second straight year. Atkinson scored a career-high 30 points in a road win at second-ranked Garinger in the State Sectional 3 finals, a performance that came on the heels of an 18-assist night in a win over sixth-ranked Independence.

This is locker room material for Anna, and for the team. Nothing better than to put fuel in Anna Atkinson's fire for Saturday. :xyzthumbs

Of course Anna should be POY, but who cares? She is starting to get notice around the state and so is the program. Several of these girls will have a chance to play in college. I feel if McDowell can win this game Saturday they will really cement their status as a premier program. They will have an even better team next year. Let's put all focus on winning this game on Saturday and let everything else fall into place. Congratulations to Sydney and Reynolds for a fine season!

I'm done with this topic as far as debating who should be POY. Congrats to all who made the team.

Ladiesfan, I do agree that Anna is now getting the exposure that she rightfully deserves, and as you said, Anna might not be the only one out of the group to get looks. Lovik being as tall as she is, and playing outside, naturally schools will look at that. I've heard rumors from different people that Kay Yow may be in attendance tomorrow to watch some potential talent. That would be sweet. I know Langston Wertz is really wanting McDowell to come to next years Dell Curry tourney so they can get more exposure, McDowell has been invited in the past but scheduling conflicts kept us from going. And as far as McDowell being a premier program, I think they have been for a while. McDowell dosen't put out the D1 players that other schools do, but with the coaching tradition of McDowell and the numerous kids that have gone on to smaller schools, McDowell is defiininte one of the most reguarded schools in the state. Funny thing is though, I have been checking out some stuff on NCPreps.com and those down east have no clue about Atkinson and the rest of the team. That may be a good thing come tomorrow.

After reading the article, I see you left out Brianna Worley (Reynolds) as Honorable Mention. I really can't explain why Sydney was POY, and not Anna, but I also wonder why Joey Davis got Coach of the Year for the boys and not the guy from East Burke? Sydney is a fine player, but I personally don't think she is the best on our team, I think Alex was far more important to us than she was, but that is just me. I wonder is there is a person vendeda's (no I can't spell!) going on here. Does someone not like Silvers and this is how they get back at him, if so it's not right to Anna. She is clearly the best player in the conference. I have a feeling next year, we (meaning the rest of the conference) will pay for this!

sorry for leaving her off the list. Not sure what the deal really is behind the whole voting process. As far as East Burke goes, their boys team made the decision that they did not want the individual awards because they wanna display that basketball is a "team concept" Therefor, none of the East Burke boys or Coach Bliss were nominated for All conference honors.
