in my travels i make it known that i enjoy fastpitch to find out who else is and what their team is or was. i come across alot of nw4a fans especially alexander central fans and former players. an interesting topic has risen from my discussions about what contributes to the success of ac teams year after year and the demise of former coach. the coach held a "conditioning" class from aug. to dec. every year with only softball team members, about 20 or so to work out in weight room for conditioning. 2 or 3 out of 5 days he worked in gym on batting, pitching, fielding, and situation play. thus giving ac a 3 or 4 month jump on other teams. when that class was taken away from him because of high school rules concerning team practices out of season well you know the rest. my question is this---if this is a legal concept to conditioning that would take care of preparing for your sport even though you're bound to your current in season sport and if it is illegal how many schools use this practice and is central now doing it themselves. what does nchssa say concerning this? sure would help our team to have this in place but not fair if others use it and are suppose to. back to my traveling now.

I think as long as it is a credited class and open to everyone it is legal. I know alot of schools do this in the spring with football and in the fall with basketball. It is a great idea and a good way to get around not being able to practice during the off season which don't make any sense to me anyway

If you want to know for sure what the answer is go to the NCHSAA site at www.nchsaa.unc.edu/ and e-mail Ms. Shannonhouse, she is the lady in charge of womens sports for NC. Lets us know what you find out

    Team Practices

Not sure about school class, but think as long as the class is open to anyone to take then it is legal. He/She is the gym teacher and whatever his daily "lesson plans" are is up to him/her. Now as far as getting a jump, I think you can practice anytime with 1 less than what you play with as long as you recognize the "dead" periods. Not sure if thats what your asking but hope it helps. Like I said not 100% sure on the school class.

I got my reply back from Ms. Shannonhouse with NCHSSA and she shot that type of class out of the water. She stated that a sport specific conditioning and training class is not suppose to happen. I guess that blows our plans out for next year.
