UPDATE: The opening at McDowell still hasn't been filled as of April 16th. I'm thinking Carson Gowan is the likely candidate for the HC position. I have heard that the coach from Cloudland HS in Roan Mountain TN has been interviewed. Not sure how good they were last year, but Cloudland is a 1A power in Tennessee. But for that person, there will be a huge difference between a school of Cloudland's size (Approx. 300) in comparision to McDowell (1775), reguardless, that would be an interesting pick.

I'll do you one better, bigdan. The McDowell job hasn't even been posted yet. Last time there was a vacancy the AD, principal, and superintendent were all involved. This time, both super and princpal are retiring in June, and the Board of Ed. is highly involved in the hunt for a new superintendent. No telling when this thing will be taken care of. I would be willing to bet that maybe the Cloudland coach has inquired, but I can tell you for a fact that no one has been interviewed (and you know that I am well connected with the situation). I know that an E. Burke assistant has also inquired about the job, just don't know who. I'll try to do some leg work on this one tomorrow, if I get the chance. Heck, the way things are going, there may even be a new AD next year....

East Gaston goes back to 4A when Crest does.

Yep, East Gaston goes back to 4A starting in 2005. The key to our future success is keeping our current coach. Also, we hope we're able to keep a similar conference alignment in '05 unlike what was initially proposed. The new split 4A/3A conference hopes to look something like this.

    Ashbrook(4A)
    Charlotte Catholic(3A)
    East Gaston(4A)
    Forestview(3A)
    Hunter Huss(3A)
    North Gaston(3A)
    South Point(3A)

Yes, I really hope that conference alignment comes to pass. Before they were sticking the Gaston teams with a lot of the charlotte schools that don't have much fan support. That would really hurt ticket sales down the road. The new realignment depends a lot on Hunter Huss' petition to play up to 3A since their enrollment will cause them to fall into the 2A category. Next year, we hope to keep moving in the right direction. We have a lot of starters with experience coming back along the line of scrimmage with some pretty good skill players as well. Looking forward to another good season next year.

Well, I stand corrected by the NCHSAA. They came out today with a "second draft" of conference realignment proposals for the 2005 year. It can't get much better than this. The conference proposal included Crest (4A) instead of Charlotte Catholic (3A) as previously reported. The new proposal goes like this:

    Crest (4A)
    East Gaston (4A)
    Ashbrook (4A)
    South Point (3A)
    Forestview (3A)
    Hunter Huss (3A)
    North Gaston (3A)

    Poor North Gaston!

Yeah, I noticed last night that the NCHSAA has now moved Crest out of the NW4A...from what you read and hear from people, Crest wanted back in the NW4A? So, does Crest try to fight this 2nd draft, or are they content in playing in this split 3A/4A conference?

Depends on how bad they wanted to be in the NW4A. In my opinion, this new split conference is not a bad situation for Crest. It will present some good, competitive football for all of the fans and for all of the schools involved. Not to mention ticket sales should be good because Gaston schools have been known to travel well.

Football would be a no-brainer, but how about the other sports?
