Can anyone explain and provide legitimate reasons why ACC schools like Wake Foerst and Duke do not have softball program? This just amazes and frustrates me to no end. Congrat's to Western Carolina University for stepping up and getting it done!!

noooo.....but when we were in discussion with NC State back a few years ago the excuses were: we are waiting on funding, facilities to open up, rowing is ahead of softball, once the football renovations are complete, the old facilities will be handed down to the females and so on.........
we emailed alot to the AD, robinson and fowler and telephoned them alot inquiring on a regular basis to progress of any female sport added to force their hand some. Its very frustrating and Clemson is adding it next year and hopefully Wake and Duke will follow suit as well, SOON! Call them up or email them........and report back what they tell you.

Rowing!! Sounds like no one can get a legitimate reason. I belive the AD at Wake, Ron Wellman, his daughter played fastpitch in on a ASA travel team and in college. I'm surprised he hasn't stepped up to get something there.

Nothing against the Cheer Girls, but colleges offer scholarships for them, (and they should) then why don't schools who have baseball teams have fastpitch softball?
I wonder how Title IX plays into all this?

as for Wake -- they are in full compliance with Title IX as far as sports offered. Some background...they have 8 men's and 8 women's teams -- 6 are the same (i.e. basketball-basketball, soccer-soccer, etc.), then the men have football & baseball and the women have volleyball & field hockey. They aren't going to drop the field hockey any time soon since they are back-to-back national champs! (and no, I'm no field hockey fan ... just thought I'd share what I'm sure they're taking into consideration, among other things).

Thanks for the info Bombshell. What will it take for Wake to step up and put in a fastpitch program? I agree there should not be any need to drop another women's sport, but what is keeping Wellman from getting it done? After the ACC expansion is complete, Wake and Duke will remain the only schools in the conference without softball. At schools like Wake and Duke, I wouldn't think funding would be an issue, and with their academics, both schools would have no problem recruiting. I just don't get it.

yeah, I'm with you guys on that (don't need to drop a sport if you just expand) -- but to expand you do have to have the money, and not for one sport, but for a new men's sport as well. And I think, at least for Wake, they don't currently have the funds -- my understanding is they are not raising any part of their budget (entire budget, not just athletic) one dime for next year -- so bad economy has hit them as well. Hopefully in a few years they will be able to get something done. I'm all for it!

I had not heard this....about time if that is the case. I mean what a hotbed of fastpitch softball the surrounding area is for that school to not have had a team.
