Expansion of the Playoffs and other Items

baseball playoffs...

I don't really care about adding more teams to the playoffs, because like someone said, as it is now its an honor to make it. However, I would like to see the baseball playoffs expanded to where one loss didn't send you home. Maybe the 8 teams that now face off in the first 3 rounds could just play a double elimination bracket, sorta like the NCAA does for the regionals.

 

Could not agree more,BUT 7-17 records in baseball, 2-8 in football do not belong. I could care less about how they are doing at the end of the season, THEY DO NOT belong in any playoff, good kids just not talented enough.....

 

Isn't it possible that a sub-.500 team is better than a .750 team if the sub .500 team has had a tougher schedule??? Should overall records alone determine who gets into the playoffs?

I will agree that the current format of football playoffs is a travesty to the playoff system...

 

Perhaps the reason football and basketball get more teams in the playoffs is because both of those sports attract a bigger gate than baseball does. Baseball is a financial drain to most schools because the sport generates little, if any revenue. Most baseball programs, in fact, almost every other sports in the HS are supported by football and basketball. It's reality.

 

"Financial Drain" ? Our school spends virtually nothing on Baseball. I had to buy my son's uniform just to have one that fit. :huh:

 

It's a financial drain in terms of transportation, maintaining the field, and equipment. I think it terrible that you had to buy your kids uniform. Transportation is the big one. Schools have to pay $1.00 per mile to operate those buses. Factor 2 buses per away game and do the math. It's expensive to run a HS baseball program. Especially when baseball doesn't bring in any revenue. Almost all HS baseball programs operate in the red. Sorry, but don't kill the messenger.

 

I tend to agree,hulkie, but the "baseball" schools do well financially through their own booster clubs.

The football schools, obviously, do well, but there are many, many schools that their football program gets little or no support. Charlotte is a good example. There are a number of schools that are lucky to attract 50-75 supporters to their games.

I know that Charlotte is unique in that sense, but it is a fact. Now, if we were a small community, football would be king. But I agree with you, baseball is not a revenue producing sport at most schools.
