Did anybody go to the big scrimmage over at Western Carolina yesterday? Usually the Asheville paper has a big writeup on this, but I haven't heard a word about it. McDowell was scheduled to scrimmage Erwin, Weddington, and Cherokee yesterday. Other mountains teams including AC Reynolds and Murphy was also scheduled to be there. I've been visiting quite a few practices at McDowell and I think Coach Haynie may have these kids confident enough to where they feel like they can win. The Titans mayu very well cause havoc in the NW4A this year.

Ahhhh, bigdan, I told you that I would let you know what happened when I saw you the other day at practice. McDowell scrimmaged Charlotte Christian, Weddington, and Cherokee. 1st up against Christian, McDowell outscored them 3-zip. Davon (fell in a black hole, totally forgot his last name, embarassing) scored all 3 TD's. The McDowell D dominated. Against Weddington, both teams scored 1TD each. McDowell forced a Weddington fumble at the 1 to prevent a second TD. Against Cherokee, it was again a 1-1 tie, but McDowell had 2 called back because of penalties, including one of the biggest phantom block in the back calls that I have ever seen (I say that because you have to at least touch someone to have a block in the back, not stick out your hand and miss by 3 feet).

New attitude in Marion. More hard hits last night than the last 3 years combined. The corners played in your face man D, and the linebacker play was great. If teams overlook McDowell, they will get smacked around big-time. You heard it here first; barring injuries, McDowell will make some noise in the NW4A. Dan, make sure that you make it to Ledger next week. You will be pleasantly surprised.

you talking about Davon Gardner? :xyzthumbs

I'l tell you, from what I have seen so far in practce I think McDowell has a group of kids that can make some plays. Including Gardner, I think Deron Norwood, Jeremy Greenwood, and of course you can't forget little ol' Kenny Swepson. Funny thing is we haven't even mentioned Kevin Johnson. Offense is going to be fun to watch this year.

I'm definintely glad to hear that the defense has a little attitude. Can't wait for friday night. Payback is coming for Mitchell... :laugh1:

Hey, since you were there too, did you get a chacne to see McDowell scrimmage? Always good to get an outsiders view on things.

Well, I was on the bus with the Reynolds team and didn't get there until late, so I only saw the last little bit of McDowell against Cherokee. From what I saw, McDowell did seem to have a renewed life in them. I thought they played with a lot more passion for the game than before. Of course being from Reynolds I have seen the "box" or single wing many times and I am well aware of the problems it can cause. I expect if McDowell continues to play with the desire they did in the little time I saw them they will cause problems in the conference. I do think they will have to work on a passing game though, in order to become a top 2 or 3 team.

I agree with your comments on the "box". There has to be a passing game to keep the defense from all crowding the line and disrupting the running game.

FWIW, McDowell had 3 TD passes last night, 2 of which were 30+ yards in length, plus on additional one that was called back. And yes, Dan, I am talking about Davon Gardner. For some reason, his last name totally left my brain about the time I started to type.

Now, granted I didn't see many passes, but those I did see, weren't what you would call "quality" passes. Yeah, there were a couple completed, but from what I saw, the way the Cherokee was playing defense, completing passes isn't something to brag about. I was just stating that the passing game isn't what it needs to be, to compete with Freedom, Reynolds, East Burke, and that is my opinion. I think those teams will stop the run eventually and I think your passing game needs to improve greatly to beat those teams. Again, I didn't see the whole scrimmage, and I am judging from just the little I saw, so please don't jump on me for that, I could be wrong, and will be the first to admit it.

Wasn't jumping, rocks23. That total probably surprised everyone in the building, including me. I just didn't let it be known in my original post that of the TD's that McDowell scored, 3 came by the pass.
