Saw a piece on this on the news last nite - the Mayor of Morganton is trying to raise funds (didn't mention a specific amount) for the families to help cover some of the travel expenses. Gave an address, etc to send monies to or to call - didn't write any of it down - but I would assume that WBTV (who ran the piece) would have the information if anyone wanted it.

I'm from Morganton and the city is crazy about these kids. We're proud of their accomplishments and are excited for their prospects in Williamsport. Personally, I think they'll get through pool play. If they don't, they're still a good group of baseball players. I thought they were only guaranteed 3 games, but I think they get to play some of the international teams if they don't make it out of their pool. They are leaving Monday morning for Williamsport. 1st game is the 20th on ESPN and I know all of the kids will appreciate your support.

They are trying to raise money to help defray the costs for the families. $50K has been floated around and I think about $20K has been raised. I think any donations can be sent to the Recreation Department at this address:
City of Morganton, PO Box 3448, Morganton, NC 28680-3448

To answer an earlier question about high school, I think all of the kids are in the Freedom district right now. 10 of the 11 go to Liberty Middle and 1 goes to Table Rock Middle school. Both feed Freedom and Jeff Williams has to be licking his lips about these kids. Here's one bit of trivia about the players and middle school ball in Burke County, it may be the same elsewhere - I don't know, but the kids on this team that are in the 6th grade can't play baseball, or any sports for that matter, this year.

6th graders get punished from elementary to middle school........who knows why?????

most student/athletes at this age are eager to learn and develop quickly!

Just as there is a big difference in 60 foot bases (ages 12 & 13 years) and 90 foot bases (ages 13 & 14 years), there is also a big difference between elementary school and middle school. Most middle schools do not allow 6th graders to participate in school sponsored extra curricular programs because these students need to concentrate on making the adjustment from elementary to middle school. 6th grade academics are difficult to say the least, and it is the first of many years to cme where grades really count in a student's future. There is still plenty of time for baseball.

Technically, Raleigh has not made an adjustment between Middle Schools and Junior Highs.

Under the Junior High system a 6th grader could not play up with the 9th graders - makes sense - even though a 9th grade (junior high student) could play up with the high school boys (mostly jv).

Under the middle school system, when the 9th graders moved to the high schools, the state never made the change for 6th graders to join in the middle school sports.

The problem has not been addressed because some counties still operate under the junior high system and Raleigh feels like there would be confusion and inequities in trying to implement 6th grade participation. So, a middle school can still play a junior high school without the 6th graders being "hurt". Still, the 9th graders can participate against a middle school team. Confused yet?!
