I knew Cameron was playing for Midlands ... didn't know they had changed their name for the tournament. I saw him down there last year and look forward to seeing him again.

WWBA has a policy of not setting the rosters until the day the tournament starts, so it's hard to look at a summer roster and know if all of the players will still be with that team down at the WWBA. Lots of players do switch teams and most teams will be hunting for pitching until the last couple of days before the tournament. Because of that, I had not looked at any of the other rosters too try and find the NC guys. The ABD Bulldogs had some NC guys last year. There were a couple of other teams also.

The O's looked ready for Ft. Myers this weekend in Atlanta, going 4-0 at the East Cobb Fall Classic following the previous weekend's 3-0 finish at the Palmetto Classic at Furman. Unfortunately the EC folks changed the schedule on the O's at the last minute and lessened the competition, but it was still a good workout. The O's were originally scheduled to play the EC Strikers and the EC Astros on Sunday, but that was changed on the Thursday before the tournament.

Still the O's defeated three respectable opponents in the Georgia Knights (5-1), Hillcrest (SC) Baseball (1-0), and the Atlanta Athletics (7-0). The fourth opponent was a JV team from Spartanburg that threw a ninth grade left-hander. Suffice it to say that I doubt On Deck teams will return to East Cobb again except for Perfect Game events.

The pitching looked very strong, with Jeremy Mathis (Myers Park) and Wes Waddell (Olympic) combining for the first win; David Baumgardner (South Point) and Daniel Hill (Charlotte Christian) pitching the game 2 shutout; Tom Porter (North Meck, Elon) and Ryan Rockecharlie (Myers Park) combining for another shutout in game 3; and Wes Wrenn, Matt Layman (South Meck) and Michael Bogaert (Ashbrook) getting some work in on Sunday afternoon.

The O's also got some very impressive wood bat hitting from lots of guys, tallying 29 hits in the first three games. Jonathon Ratledge (South Meck, South Caroina), who made two outs all weekend, Drew Martin (Ashbrook, NC State), Zack Kennedy (South Meck, Alabama-Birmingham) and Bogaert led the way. With Mike Cavasini (North Meck, North Carolina) and Greg Miclat (JM Robinson, Virginia) getting on base in front of those four sticks, a big inning is always a possibility. Josh Cabell (South Meck), Wes Borden (South Meck, Appalachian) and Trey Starnes (Independence) will likely round out the O's formidable starting lineup and hit in the 7, 8 and 9 spots next weekend.

It should be a lot of fun. Ft. Myers will be great, but with games going on in 5 different locations, it won't be quite the same atmosphere as Jupiter.

Good luck to all the Carolinas players making the trip!

    The Son

    It has been awhile.

With the games being played in 5 different locations it will be much different than Jupiter. With all the scouts at Jupiter they just walked straight to a field and watched. Now they have to get in their car and drive every where. Thats not good for the kids that have not committed yet. But don't worry you will be seen no matter what. Word travels fast down there, so keep your heads up and played hard.
If you want to turn some scouts heads then you have to play hard every out of every game and don't take a play off because that might be the only play a scout gets to watch. Scouts like to see that kid that walks off the field after a game and you can't even read the name of the team he plays for. That means that he gave it 100% on the field and that means that the scout that saw him might be at the next game your team plays. Yeah play hard and everything is great but the most important thing you have to do down there is relax. Get your sleep because come the final day if you get there you are going to be glad that you got it when every body else is tired. Its a lot of basbeall in a short period of time so take it in and don't have a reason to look back and say dang I should have done this or that. It goes by fast. The days can be long and hot. But those nights fly by with some shut eye.

Its like living a dream as one of my teammates said.
