    I wish we could

compile a list of all the unsigned sr's that want to play at the next level. Then get a good understanding of their academic situation. Have a work out so we could give them a good understanding and us of what level they project at. And then go out and find them a school to play at.

Here is a fact. If you have the desire and the work ethic needed to play in college their is a place for you. Your academic situation can close and open doors in this process. But even if you have poor grades their are places you can play.

What is frustrating is determining who the guys are that really want to play from the others. IMO it becomes clearer to me by who shows up at the events like Belmont Abbey is putting on this weekend for 40.00 and who does not.

We can promote players all we want to. Put names out there and talk them up to the cows come home. But at some point and time they themselves have to show "they" want it and put themselves out there to be seen. Any kid that wants to really play at the next level should jump at the chance to be seen by college coaches. If they dont you have to ask yourself "how bad do "they" really want to play? I understand that some are playing football. But they dont play football on Saturdays. It will be interesting to see who shows up on Saturday and also at the other events coming up soon.

We have some guys that have expressed an interest in playing at the next level. But their actions speak otherwise. A hitting clinic put on at our own HS by Freddie Suggs for 50.00. Not one of our players showed up. The two guys that wanted to come were invited to play in the Futures Game that Impact put on. They were all told about the Showcase at Belmont this Saturday. None are going. You want to guess how many coaches Im going to call for them? Guess 0 and you got it right. The coach has a job to do. But so does the player. Its a two way street. Im not going to risk my reputation for guys that dont have the desire to drive five minutes to a hitting clinic or go to a 40.00 showcase. Put up or shut up.

The reality is we dont know everything going on. Sometimes there is more to the story than is told or seen or assumed. Last week I helped three different players get roster spots at college programs. They dont play for me. I have never met their parents. But I have seen them play and they can play. They took the first steps to help themselves. Sit around and wait for someone to call you and you have not done one thing to help yourself. Very frustrating to me. I have no sympathy for people like that. The fact is they dont want it bad enough anyway. The sad thing is the same parents that have kids that wont go to a hitting camp or spend 40.00 on a showcase will be the first to bash the HS coach for not helping their kid get a scholley or a roster spot.

Dustin Myers plays for the Heat, '09 I believe, and he is from Winston. Used to play a little with the Angels. Pretty sure he goes to West Forsyth but I could be wrong. I've seen him pitch and he does a good job. I'd rather not repeat any specific numbers because they could be rumors. Maybe someone closer to the situation could chime in.

    Dustin Myers

You are correct One Putt.. Dustin plays for the Heat 09's and goes to West Forsyth. He is one of the rising lefties that will keep that program on the map.

Well put Coach 27. I get tired of players who say they want to play at the next level, but do nothing to help themselves get there. I am constantly sending out information on players. I constantly promote events for the players to attend. I enjoy promoting kids and trying to get kids noticed, but it is frustrating that I work harder than some of them do in this process. Then after the player graduates they want to complain about the coaching staff not helping them out. But one thing is for sure, I won't give up. I enjoy this sport and teaching it to kids way too much to give up.

"Every college coach notices the studs. They don't need help in promoting themselves. But the majority of scholarships or positions opened are at the DII, DIII and Juco's."

There are many, many players across our state talented enough to play at the next level, but the differences between players are minute. It could be grades (a huge factor), attitude, work ethic or initiative; all things controlled by the player. If you are a school looking to sign 4 players and 20 you are watching look about the same...who do you think they will make the offers to?

The one thing that bothers me is this. It was just a few years ago that players did not have an opportunity to "showcase" their talents before a group of colleges. They had to pray and hope that a college recruiter may see them play by word of mouth or by accident. Because of this many players were lucky to be offered a scholarship to an in-state school. Our colleges were going outside our state to find their talent.

That is not the case now. The players are afforded an opportunity to display their skills in front of college and pro scouts. There is no excuse for any player to go unnoticed in this state. If one doesn't take advantage of all the opportunities this state affords...shame on you.

    Dustin Myers

Dustin plays for Heat 09"s and goes to West Forsyth. Last year he was Offensive player of the year for their JV squad.Good control and strong presence on the mound. He throws in the mid 80's and can reach 87-88. He has a good breaking ball and an off speed pitch. Strong at the plate and has good bat speed. He was impressive in East Cobb and Ft Myers for the Heat 09"s winning every game he pitched. Great kid, he makes his Mama proud.

I think someone that is definately flying under the radar would be a kid by the name of Ryan Glass, he plays for Butler but doesnt really have a solid position yet but can basically play anywhere that you would need him to. I have seen him play on a number of occasions and think that he has the potential at being pretty good little ball player. I have also seen his brothers play and all I can say is that the kid comes from good genes.

Yep, I keep kidding Mr Glass about that. He said he was considering having a new batch for the millenium.
