    SJ in 3A

The South Johnston Trojans have locked up the # 1 seed from the Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference in eastern NC.

The Trojans have been a perennial baseball power almost every year since its inception in 1969. Only 1 state championship to show for it, but almost every year a conference champion or co-champ or runnerup.

Not much turnover of head coaches here, I think only 4 in 38 years. Bruce Coats who coached the first 13 years and had 12 conf champs, Steve Coats (yes his son a former UNC player), Pat Smith with the one state champion team, and the current coach Keith Durham, a former SJ player).

Lot of community pride in this baseball program.

Smithfield-Selma(18-4, 11-2) locked up the first seed out of the Greater Neuse 4A Conference on Friday night with one game to go. The other 4 places are still up for grabs as East Wake and Garner are tied at 9-4 in the league and Clayton and West Johnston are tied at 7-6 in the league. Clayton and West play on Monday night.
