Question...If batter hits ball straight away to center field and ball hits top rail of fence and it bounces back in and center fielder makes the catch. prior to ball hitting ground.. is this an out??? Never seen it happen...just wonderin'.

Thanks, Sir. This almost happened the other night and it occurred to me that I had never seen or heard of it. I understand when it happens in foul territory that it would be a dead (foul) ball, but I reckon in the outfield (fair territory) you would continue play just like you picked up a grounder. Thanks again.

    Ball hitting fence

Any batted ball that contacts any object other than the defensive player or players equipment/uniform is still in play, not a catch.

What if it does go over? My daughter hit one to center this year that hit the yellow plastic on the top of the fence and it did bounce back into center but was not caught. She was wondering what was the call had it bounced off the plastic and over the fence and I didn't know the answer.

A fair ball that hits the top of the outfield fence and bounces over is a home run.

    ball hitting fence

Even if the ball hits the top of the fence, rebounds back into play, contacts the outfielder, then goes back over the fence before hitting the ground, it's a homerun. I had this in a Division Women's College game.

This reminds me of when the ball hit off of Jose Canseco's head & went over the fence. Anyone remember that? That was just hilarious!!!!
