I have a 12 year old son that is looking for a weekend baseball team. He is an infielder and has done quite a bit of catching. He played on the Carolina Sting as a 10 year old and for the Carolina Cardinals as an 11 year old. He only played rec ball this summer as time was an issue with the family. We are 30 minutes west of Charlotte.

Nothing wrong with rec ball at that age. Are you sure you want to get involved with Travel ball at 11?

Come on Braves, you never know where the next star may be.....

Touchemall....if you really want to get involved at this early of an age try either OnDeck Baseball Academy or the Copperheads Organization.....they do run teams for younger age groups....not sure just how young. Both are very good programs.

Has already played a full schedule of travel ball for two years and like it. This is the best way to get better, play with and against the best talent available.

Well, that's your decision and not one that I will criticize...but at 11 or 12 that is not a priority "playing against the best". The priority is teaching him the best fundamentals and making sure he his having "fun". He will have plenty of time to compete against the best later. Quite frankly, many of the best at that age level quit playing when they reach 15-16 yo.

Based upon our personal experience as well as having observed many others over the years, I couldn't agree any more strongly with your opinion here, Braves. I'm sure I've made more than my share of mistakes trying to serve as a resource to my son over the years; but, in retrospect, fending off the travel team coaches until he reached the "playing age" of 13 was not among them.

If we hadn't had a quality rec league available to us, I might have felt differently; but, we did, and we took advantage of it. He learned the fundamentals from good coaches and had a blast playing with and against his buddies. From the age of 13 on, there was PLENTY of time to "play against the best."

You know Prep, to me, playing with and against your school buddies at that age far surpasses whatever benefit can be gained from travel ball. The relationships that are built goes far in developing their self esteem, social skills and confidence. One that may not experience choosing the other alternatives
