East Rutherford started off the season with a 12-2 six inning win versus 4A McDowell. East hit McDowell ace Michael Taylor early and often. Chad Flack (UNC) led the way, going 3-3 (1B,2B,HR, BB) with 4 RBI. Steven Harris and Preston Shytle had 3 hits apiece in ER's 17 hit attack. Freshman Zeke Blanton had a couple of hits for ER. LH Garland Jones went 5 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs, for the victory.

    No details but...
Garner beat Cary today 8-7 in 14 innings.

Joe Cutler (LHP/UTL) of Cary (headin to Univ. of Tampa next year) hit a grandslam in the bottom of the 7th to send it in to extra innings.

    Tuesday 3/2

South Meck 7, North Meck 1

South Meck came in swinging the bat well and looking solid defensively. All of their pitchers threw well (TJ Worrell-4innings (Winning pitcher), Jonathan Ratledge-2 innings, Kevin Spain-1 inning).

They look to be dangerous this year. Well deserved of the #4 ranking.

Well, it's too early to make any judgements on how each team (NM, SM) will do this year. It was a tight game for 4+ innings as both Tom Porter and TJ Worrell both displayed why they are 2 of the best pitchers in the city.

...but if this game is indicative of how South Meck will do this year. They will be very tough. The whole lineup for South is a tough out. Each player can bunt for a base hit or line the ball to the gaps. Their one sophomore stroked a Granny and then layed down a bunt on his next at bat. Their defense did not have to make many plays, but when given the opportunity, they made them well. I still say Kyle Shelton is the best defensive SS in the State (I know, most people say Josh Horton), but the kid makes all the plays and has a tremendous arm. The one thing I have noticed this year is the team chemistry appears to be the best I have seen in awhile.

This is just one game and does not prove anything, but if it is an indicator of things to come, SM is dangerous.

Once North Meck's bats come around ( and they have many strong hitters), this will be the team to beat. The key for NM is getting their rabbits on base.... I sure would hate to play them in mid season.
