Hats off to Charlotte Christian and Mr. Bard (who'll one day be better than his brother).

I have not seen Ashbrook play this poorly since this year's seniors were freshmen. 4 fielding errors and 5 baserunning mistakes against a team as good as CC is murder!

Good luck to CC for the remainder of their season. Class guys and great players!

sounds like it was a great game. Ragsdale gets to take on NE in about two weeks

Glenn plays small ball, hands Northeast Guilford first loss

    4-6-04

KERNERSVILLE -- Glenn coach Dale Ijames tries to get his team to understand that you don't always have to hit the ball over the fence to win games.

That point was driven home for the Bobcats against Northeast Guilford in the continuation of a rain-delayed game from last Wednesday. Glenn scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Rams 4-3 in a matchup of the top two teams in the News & Record's Lucky 13 poll.

The No. 2 Bobcats had only one hit in the inning, but benefitted from two walks, a passed ball and two wild pitches to hand the top-ranked Rams their first loss of the season and take over first place in the Piedmont Triad 3-A conference with a 7-0 record.

"I'm always telling them to just try and make things happen," said Ijames. "And this brings that home for them. Good teams are going to take advantage of other team's mistakes."

Glenn's Neal Parnell led off the bottom the sixth with a single to left field. After advancing to third on a passed ball and wild pitch, Parnell scored the Bobcats' first run on a fielders choice grounder.

Ryan Caldwell walked to load the bases and a wild pitch brought two more runs home to tie the score at 3.

Another walk and another wild pitch allowed Caldwell to score the go-ahead run.

Caldwell then came in to pitch in the seventh inning. He gave up an infield single before shutting the door on the Rams and picking up his third save.

"It's a big win any time you beat the No. 2 team in the state," Ijames said. "We know we're going to bump into them again, at least two more times."

It was definitely not a typical outing for Northeast starter Mitch Atkins. With several scouts clocking his every pitch, the highly touted prospect cruised through the first three innings, striking out eight.

But he struggled with his control in the sixth, and it cost him and the Rams the game.

"He's done a good job for us. He'll bounce back," Northeast Guilford coach David Lawing said. "In our situation because we've been playing so well and kind of rolling, in a round-about way this may end up helping us. The pressure (of an undefeated season) is off. We'll put this behind us and move on."

Despite the fact Ijames has only three seniors, he refuses to call this a rebuilding year.

"They're going to battle," Ijames said. "That's the biggest thing about this team, their character."

    Christian vs. Piedmont

5-5 Tie. Game called due to darkness @ 7:30. after 13 or 14 innings. Christian was leading 5-2 with 2 outs and 2 strikes and two on base in the top of the 7th when #6 for Piedmont (someone please provide the name)- hit one out to tie it. The next 6 or 7 innings were scoreless. Each team had opportunities to win it but didn't capitalize. Umpires knees apparently gave out after 13 and called it. The well behaved crowd was not pleased. Umpires left the park without turning on their headlights.

Deacon, #6's name is Dallas Tarleton. One of the best clutch hits I have ever seen in high school. His second HR of the year.

North Henderson 5, West Henderson 4

This ties the conference throught the 1st half with both teams now 7-1 in the WHC. WH is now 10-2 and NH 9-1 overall.

WP Levi Wright for NH, LP Spencer Linn (5-1) for WH. Both in relief. Both teams scored only 2 earned runs in the game as errors plagued both.

For NH, Patrick Mugan was 2/3. For WH Mike Facchinei was 2/2 and Seth Corliss was 2/4.

WH had a 4-0 lead going into the 5th when NH got 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 BB and an error. In the 6th NH got 3 more after what should have been a 3rd out error comitted by WH.

Mike Facchinei started the game for WH and went 5, Patrick Mugan started for NH and went 3.

West Henderson had never lost a WHC game til tonite, winning 39 in a row.

    East Rutherford 8 Lincolnton 6

Lincolnton was leading this one 6-4 with two out in the bottom of the 6th when an error at 1B allowed two runs to score, then ER's Garland Jones followed up with a monster HR to put the Cavs up two. Jones then threw out a runner at the plate in the top of the 7th (not sure why the runner was being sent, the tying run was on 1B) and came in with two out and struck out the last Linc. batter with two on to pick up the save.

    Winning Pitcher - Christopher Wittimore : 6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R
    Save - Garland Jones : .1 IP, K, 0H, 0 R
Home Run - Jones, ER (4)
    East Rutherford 13-1, 7-0 Lincolnton 7-6, 5-2 (Midwest 2A)
