    Independence 9 Hopewell 1

WP - Farry LP - Stage

Zach Farry pitched a great game for Independence, allowing only 2 hits - one of which was a homerun by Dan Woodall. Farry kept the Hopewell batters out of sync the entire game. Ryan Stage started the game for Hopewell and pitched 4 and 1/2 innings. Independence showed their strength with their bats and hit the ball very well...that coupled with a few miscues by Hopewell resulted in the lead for Indy of 8-1 in the middle of the 5th. Hopewell then brought in Dusty White, who pitched the remainder of the 5th, as well as the 6th & 7th, allowing 2 hits, no earned runs and striking out 5. Independence proved their ranking with solid, fundamental play, as well as backing it up with great pitching and solid hitting. It was senior night for Independence and the team was fairly pumped before the game and delivered a great performance in front of their fans.

    South Meck impressive

It was quite a performance by South and pitcher TJ Worrell. TJ's stats for the game (6 2/3 innngs pitched, 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 hit batter) are not nearly as impressive as was his performance. Through 6 TJ had faced only 19 batters -one more than the minimum (to that point 2 hits but 1 double play). Down a touchdown, Myers Park pieced together two hits, a walk and a hit batter to scratch out a run in the seventh. TJ's off-speed stuff was the best I have seen it, both a straight change-up and a late breaking curve, and his fastball had its normal pop. He got people out with all three pitches. TJ was disappointed to not get to finish, but Kevin Spain made Coach Bagwell look brilliant when he came on to finish the game with a strike out with runners at the corners.

Myers Park's defense was spotty in the bottom of the first, and it was 2-0 before the first out was recorded, 4-0 when the inning was over. That's like giving a bulldog raw meat; Myers Park never recovered. During the game South showed an impressive amount of team speed (I believe 3 bunt base hits, one each by Shelton, Kennedy and Austin) and had Myers Park off balance from the start. Congrats to David Rubinstein on a 4-4 night and to Jonathon Ratledge on a line drive solo home run that was just crushed. Kyle Shelton was awesome at short, making tough play after tough play look routine. It is easy to see why the Tarheels recruited the young man.

This South team is on quite a roll -- the potential match-up between South and AC would be well worth the price of admission. Too bad that would be in the state quarterfinals (projected for May 25 at South if I read the brackets right) -- a three-game series between the two would be really fun to watch.

As for the Mustangs, they still have a chance to finish second in the conference with a win at home against Butler on senior night Thursday. They will need to play better defensively. The good news is that some bats have gotten hot of late -- Logan Smith (2-3 last night) and Jeremy Mathis (1-3) have hit well over the last 4 games, joining JJ Rollins, Wes Flowers and Jim Berger, who have hit well most of the year. To give them credit, they did sandwich 6 straight conference wins in between the 2 South losses to go from 3-3 to 9-4 in the conference. Hopefully they can finish it off Thursday, get a little help from the Sabres, and finish second by themselves.

Completion of Protested Game from 4/2/04

    Sun Valley - 5 (13-5, 7-5)
    Concord - 4

    WP - Blalock (5-2)
    LP - Dempsey

Although it was only 1 1/2 innings of ball, it sure was filled with fireworks. Game started at the top of the 6th, Sun Valley leading 2-1, with Concord batting with runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Concord squeezes right off the bat (which I think was smart being the visiting team) to tie the game 2-2. The sacrifice was so good, SV was unable to get the runner out at 1st leaving 1st and 2nd still with only 1 out. Next batter hits the 1st pitch into left field for a single but the runner from 2nd wasn't able to score leaving bases loaded. SV brings the infield in and Blalock proceeds to strike out the next two batters, the first one looking, leaving the score 2-2.

Blalock leads off the bottom of the 6th with a double, followed by a sac bunt moving him to 3rd. This is followed by 3 successive singles that score 2 SV runs. The next batter grounds out to 3rd leaving 2 outs. The next batter singles bringing in the 3rd SV run in the inning, which proved to be very important. The next batter also grounds out to 3rd, ending the 6th inning with SV leading 5-2.

First batter for Concord at the top of the 7th is hit by the pitch followed by a relatively deep fly ball to left, which is caught for the 1st out bringing up the lead off hitter. The batter promptly hits the 1st pitch from Blalock over the left field fence for a two run homer, making it 5-4. (I told you it was important). The next batter singles to right field bringing the go ahead run to the plate. The next batter grounds out to 3rd followed by a popup to the 2nd baseman for the final out leaving SV with the win. Whew!!!

Just a side note in case anybody was interested. The protest was upheld, not because numbers don't mean anything, but because the umpire had incorrectly ejected the illegal batter from the game during the initial contest, and therefore the protest was upheld. At least, that's the story I was told.

The win for SV leaves Weddington and Robinson in a 1st place tie and Piedmont and SV tied for 3rd place.

    Tuesday Action:

In somewhat of a surprise, Northern Nash topped #9 ranked New Bern 2-1. Since New Bern and JH Rose were tied for the lead in the Big South going into last nights action, this has huge implications on seedings. New Bern and JH Rose play each other later this week.

    Northern Nash 2
    New Bern Bears 1
