    Hopewell 6, Myers Park 2

The game was a pitcher's dual for 5 innings. Seniors Jared Keesee and Logan Smith battled. Both were very effective in the early innings -- Smith with an overpowering fastball and Keesee with a good heater but an even better hook that kept the Mustang hitters off balance.

Myers Park broke through for 1 in the bottom of the 2nd, then Hopewell tied it in the 4th on a bad hop single, a stolen base and a Keesee rbi single to left center. Hopewell went ahead 2-1 later in the inning on a double steal. Myers Park tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th on a JJ Rollins ground ball after an infield hit by Berger and 2 walks. Ryan Sage came on for Hopewell and got out of the inning with no further damage. The Mustangs left the bases loaded for the second time in the contest.

After a scoreless 5th, Ben Beard started the 6th by driving a 1-out Smith fastball 405+ to dead center field for a homerun and a 3-2 Hopewell lead. A walk, a wild pitch and two Myers Park errors later the score was 5-2. A double play on a liner to David Castevens at third ended the inning.

Sage cruised the rest of the way for Hopewell to record the win. Hopewell picked up one more run in the 7th off reliever Wes Flowers. Myers Park's Jim Berger got his third hit of the evening in the 7th, but the Mustangs couldn't mount a comeback threat. By my count Berger's hits were Myers Park's only 3 of the day. Rollins lined out hard twice, one to a diving play by the Hopewell right fielder, whose outstanding play drew applause from the fans on both sides. The rest of the Myers Park bats were silent in this one.

The Mustangs try to bounce back tomorrow at home against Independence.

    WP: Ben Nunn
    SV: Andrew Flynt

Garrett Keener scored 2 runs and Kevin Mattison had an RBI double and Kenny Swab with a key RBI groundout helped East defeat Northern Durham. It was 4-0 in the top of the 7th and Northern Duraham's bats came alive and chased reliever Zak Shelton out and Andrew Flynt came in and shut the door.
