Freedom JV gets a win over South Caldwell 50-35

It was a nice win for them as everyone got into the mix. Brittany got to play with the varsity tonight so Saudia handled most of the point but Sherrane and Brittany Harrell also ran things alot tonight. It was good to see the girls having fun and taking advantage of the playing time they all got . They played really good till half-time with the scoring coming from everywhere and everyone being active on defense. They were ahead by double digits most of the 1st half but almost blew it in the 2nd half. They came out like the game was over to after the break but give SC credit as they kept fighting the whole game and cut the lead to about 5. Freedom got lazy on defense and was soft on the boards and SC was getting it going till Mandy made a 3 pointer that took the steam out of them right before the buzzer in the 3rd. No one player took over for Freedom but Mandy was feeling it and scored around 15 or so and hit a couple of big shots. She can play post on the JV but really needs to embrace playing wing on the varsity level . They have post players but could use a player like her that likes to step out and hit the 3's. If she will work on her ball-handling she can be really valuable on varsity the next couple of years. One thing that I have noticed is none of the guards except Brittany really looks to drive the ball to the hoop. Saudia is a decent ball-handler and Sherrane and Tierra have enough quickness to get inside but they seem hesitent to take it strong to the hoop. Even if they don't score it makes the other team respect the drive and opens it up inside. This was good win for Freedom and one they needed to keep them up.

Freedom JV loses a heartbreaker to McDowell

This was a win in the sense they played their hearts out but lost at the buzzer. Freedom has been playing short-handed the last few games as Kelly was called up a few games back and Brittany will be playing varsity the rest of the year as well. They had another girl that had to quit and Shimika wasn't avalible so Mandy, Brooke and Saudia are putting in long mins. This was a low scoring game but it was fun to see everyone working hard on both teams. You could tell both teams wanted this one so it was no surprise it went to the wire. Saudia has got back to her defensive prowness and Mandy has really caught fire the last few games. One play that worked all night was the little lob pass to Brooke who gave Freedom the lead with 6 seconds left to play. McDowell took it the length of the court and scored the winner at the buzzer. Sherrane , Shannon and Brittany Harrell have all stepped up to help run the offense as they are all sophmores so Freedom is lucky they have that experince to draw from. Even though they lost the game I think if they play like this at East Burke they could surprise them.

    Freedom JV wrap-up

Their record wasn't that great 11-9 but they lost 3 games in OT and a couple of others by just a few points so overall it was a decent season. I said in an earlier post that they would struggle a bit with the better teams and they did but they only had two awful games - the first one at McDowell and the last one with Watagua. They will lose Mandy, Saudia , Brittany Harrell , Tierra, Sherrane, Brooke, and Shannon as they are all sophomores and both Brittiany Roberts and Kelly are with the varsity so next years team will look totally different. I think a couple of the sophomores have a solid chance to make the varsity next year. Of course the new high school may take a couple and it's going to be tough to crack varsity as they only have 2 seniors graduating. I am not going to speculate about any of the sophomore ladies as I am just a observer and I wish them all the best. With the ladies that are left I think Alex could be a good wing player if she will dedicate herself to the position and Caroline is a hard worker that should get some solid time next year - if she goes to Patton she could get ALOT of playing time as a new school generally has some growing pains starting out. I am not sure about the middle school players coming up from Table Rock but Walter Johnson done well so there should be some that could step in and play. The ladies played hard all year but just came up a bit short in a few games but they should be proud of the effort.

    Thanks T man

Thank you for your support for the Freedom JV womens program this year. I know it meant alot to the girls to get some positive press, even if it is on a message board. You are correct, all of the ladies played their hearts out each and every game and should always keep their heads held high, because in my book they are all winners.
