I do not believe it has gotten away from what it is

intended to be. What has happened is players are verballing much sooner. At least the top tier guys in each class. The fact they dont inform the guys that dont make it or at least in a timely fashion has nothing to do with how the actual event is ran. It is still a way of showcasing hs baseball players to college coaches. The vast majority of the players in attendance will not have made a college choice or have any offers on the table as of yet. There are only a handful of 09's that have actually done so already. And I am not aware of any 10's that have verballed to college programs.

The event itself is outstanding. These players will get the opportunity to play and work out in front of a ton of college coaches and professional scouts. And they will get to do it against some of the top players in the state. Many will make the most of it and will be followed into the summer season by these coaches. Some may even get offers based on their performance. Any opportunity that is afforded hs baseball players like this I am all for. My only concerns were the already verballed players attending "which will be very few" and the notification issues. Outside of those issues its a great opportunity for hs players.

    No worries

No apology necessary. I didnt take it that way, I was hoping to bring it back on subject of getting rosters. "Debating can be fun, kids!"

One suggestion I'd have for state games is to find a permanent coach, be it a legion coach or whatever, to coach the teams each year. With high school coaches rotating and doing it each year, two things happen. #1. the coach will be biased towards certain players, naturally. he gets to see his own players each and every day, and knows what they can do in game situations. at tryouts, he doesn't get to see everyone in these same type game situations. #2. he's busy coaching his own team, and doesn't have the time to go out and truly dissect all the players who will be coming out and make those tough decisions as to who should make the team and who shouldn't. he may know players that are in his immediate area or in his conference, but its impossible for a busy high school coach to have a grasp on the whole state games region full of players. if you got a legion coach who only coaches during the summer to be the head coach of state games teams, he could spend his Spring attending games that include players who will be trying out for his state games team, reading newspaper articles to get a grasp of people's performances, talking to high school coaches about their players, etc.

the other problem that most people have with state games is that the tryouts are sometimes simply a formality. most of the time the teams are picked way before the tryouts start, and if thats the case, fine. nothing wrong with picking the teams based on regular season performance. it's just that the whole idea of the phantom "tryout" to make it seem like everyone has a chance to make the team rubs some people the wrong way.

    Adding more

Maybe the answer is to add more. With only eight regions maybe add two more. There are regions that have a very large student population, therefore more players. Maybe by adding two more it will give coaches more players to look at. There are over 37 NCAA D-1,2,3 schools that carry baseball as a school. Not counting the number of Junior colleges and CC that have baseball and the number of out of state schools that may come to look. The East West games or for the seniors to showcase 99% are committed. So by removing verbally committed players expanding two more regions. This would really do wonders. As far as letting a player know. Post in. You do not have to recieve a call. Just put out a list on the wedsite a few days after tryouts. As far as the coaches. Think that is fine. Maybe have coaches coach neighboring regions. That would really change things up.

I sent a bunch of emails yesterday to people that might know some of the rosters because their kids tried out, and I was told an email did go out in Region 6 (Charlotte area) Friday telling the ones who made it, they did so. Then after "acceptances" were received back from all the players, a second email went to the other players that did not make it, telling them so. Seems like a good way.

My son is a a 2011 grad and has already verballed- six times in fact. Each time he does so this particular coach reminds him that you can not accept an offer until one is made and that a 135lb power hitter and a 54 mph fastball, may in fact, not be DI material. My son understands that of course but says it makes him feel better to make the first move. I think the first verbal was when he was 10.
