...and control will disrupt the most IMPORTANT batting mechanism.....timing! It doesn't hurt pitchers if they can bring it 50 and follow with a nice offspeeder. But when pitchers venture into the 60s much less the 70s and can add the old heartstopping, chairkicking changeup, that for the love of mike, no one seems to be able to wait on,.......oh well, ya'll get my point!.....Now hear this TBR.......the entire softball community needs positives to showoff our sport. I truly understand when someone might bow up and call BS on one thing or another, and thats OK, as long as it stays in OUR house, but DON'T forget how valuable positive press is to the future of this game.

Wow Marlin....I could not have said it better. Your last two posts nailed it!
It reminded me of an example of the dangers of overhype. This one player in baseball was touted by (probably his parents) of throwing in the low 90's. The college coaches that read TBR were interested in checking this player out. After watching him several times he was consistently 84-85. They thought something was wrong; that he had arm problems, so they stayed away from him. The word spread amongst the coaches that this kid had arm problems, so he was not being recruited.

Your second post is on target. As much as one wants to "call out" a post that promotes inaccurate information, you have to keep in mind that we're talking about young people and they don't deserve negative attention. We want to support HS softball and the DD's that play it

Chelsea played for me for two full seasons and a small portion of this past year before she was hurt. The kid is a pitcher not a thrower! She studies the game, ask questions after a game about the various hitters she faced and pitches she threw. She would ask why we called certain pitches to understand how we were setting up batters, etc. Don't sell Chelsea short as her work ethic is second to none and her desire is unreal. Also, she can play the game beyond pitching. She lead off for the Blues and hit better than .400 and none of her hits were bunts, slaps or dingers.

Marlin did hit it with his comments and we all tend to over charge our comments but Chelsea will be a great one, sure wish I still had her pitching for me.

....is dead on! I really get into what Abbey says about CLs work ethic and her interest in becoming better with the use of her brain. Learning the tendencies of your opponents is, well at least to me, one of the highest levels of the game. For Chelsea to go in that direction now is awesome. "setting up batters"........, be careful folks, there are HITTERS, not batters, that are now setting up what the pitcher might throw. Happy New Year to all!

Just to make sure that my post was not understood, my comments were not directed at Chelsea. I'm sure she is outstanding. It was a general statement about the dangers of "enthusiastic" information and how it can backfire.

From what I have read in here about Chelsea Leonard, she is a player worth paying to watch. Atta girl...keep working hard!

I dont believe they took it that way Braves, Chelsea is without a doubt, D1 material.

Coaching changes

With several top programs getting new coaches it will be intresting how it will affect them. Some I think will benefit others could be disasterous. A struggleing program coul dsurge with a new coach while an established program can be destroyed with a bad fit. Maybe not a bad coach just one that don't fit the situation. I'll give some examples form the nw4a but will not mention any specific coaches names. I have seen several programs including ours (Alexander) where changes have hurt and not just in wins and losses. I'm talking dicipline, participation along with consistance success. With our new coach I think you will see a big difference in our future teams. East Burke has never had a coach that stayed more than a year or two and it so never got a program established. With their new coach this year they could have the start of something good if she will hang around a while. Watagua has never had the greatest talent level but with an established coaching staff that stays in tack they continue to improve every year. Mcdowell has under achieved with the talent they have had and I think it is due to the changing of coaches every year. Freedom was the perinall (sp) cellar dweller till they got a coach that put his heart and soul into the job. Now they are contenders year in year out. The two biggest melt downs have been South Caldwell and AC Reynolds. Both were very good year in year out battling for the conference title along with Alexander every year SC winning a couple but both lost their long time coaches and fell apart. Reynolds fell to a middle of the pack team and SC went from first to last in the conference. Could the same happen to the likes of Butler, Kings Mt. ect. Lets hear some thoughts on how other teams will fair. And please no names and no bashing not what this is about

Just wanted to say one more thing about Chelsea. Her family is to humble to tell people but UCLA sent Chelsea a letter and I spoke to UCLA assistant for 25 minutes on the phone. They were ready to sit down and talk to her about coming to UCLA. I think that shows the ability and potential the college world sees in her pitching ability. Also, I think it shows she can throw in the middle 60's or better and with movement or Louisville, UCLA, UNC, LSU, Va Tech, JMU, and others would not have talked to me about her.
