2011 NCAA D2 Southeast Regionals 5/19 to 5/22

Nationally ranked #2 Mount Olive will be hosting this double elimination tournament where the winner advances to the NCAA D2 Championships being held in Cary, NC, at the USA Baseball Complex. The regionals run 5/19 to 5/22.

In the Southeast Regional there are 5 nationally ranked teams; #2 Mount Olive and #18 Catawba, and three PBC teams led by #9 Francis Marion, #10 UNC Pembroke and #14 Columbus State. #18 Catwaba and unranked Wingate fill out the field. What a great field with some great baseball to be played.

Opening date match ups are:

Opening day May 19th:

11:00 a.m. #3 seed UNC Pembroke vs #4 seed Columbus State

3:00 p.m. #2 seed Francis Marion vs #5 seed Catawba

7:00 p.m. #1 seed Mount Olive vs #6 seed Wingate

One upset in the first day

#9 ranked/seed #2 Francis Marion (37-16) lost to seed #5 and #19 ranked Catawba (42-13) 2-1 in 10 innings. Catawba P Nick Lomascola pitched a CG of 10 innings for Catawba while Francis Marion's Dan Sandifer pitched 9 innings himself. Catawba scored one run in the top of the 9th to tie it up and then won it in the top of the 10th with another run.

In the opening game of the day #7 ranked/seed #3 UNC Pembroke (44-10) blanked fellow PBC foe #14 ranked/#4 seed Columbus State 6-0 in recording their 10th straight win. Josh Bagley pitched a CG, 13K, 2 W performance. Keith Whitman led the Braves with 2 HRs (3/4, 3 rbi, 2 runs), Jason Coker (2/5, dbl, 2 rbi) and Aaron Parnell (3/4, triple).

In the nightcap, #1 seed/#2 ranked Mt. Olive Carter Capps (13-0) became the third pitcher on the day to pitch a CG in leading the Trojans to a 6-0 win over seed #6 Wingate.

Wingate eliminated

Wingate (34-23) was down 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th with one out and the bases were loaded but they could not push across any more runs as they are eliminated 6-1 by Francis Marion (38-16) in the first game today.

Francis Marion plays tomorrow at 3:00 against the loser of tonights 7:00 game between UNC Pembroke and Catawba.

 

I noticed Michael Knox hasn't been in the lineup for Mt. Olive. Resting? Injured?
