The two biggest surprises I saw saturday was how good Hickory was and how average Providence Day looked. I agree Hickory is a little small but their pressure was awesome to watch. As for Fred T Foard, I didn't see the ball-handlers to break Hickory's pressure even though they are experienced . I kept waiting for Bishop McGuinness to get the transition game moving as that has been their trademark but it never really cranked up. I also realize it was the first live bullets for most of the teams so we can't get too caught up in how they all played. As for the NW 4A teams , I tend to agree with what was said about McDowell. They are a well coached team with solid guard play and the freshmen have some size and will just better as the year goes on. They play hard and should be in the hunt for the title as always. Freedom started out a little slow in beating Salisbury but I thought they played much better in the loss to Westover .They moved the ball more , opened up the offense and the post players started playing tougher in the paint. That was even more evident when they beat Oak Hill Academy to end the scrimmage. They had to really step it up considering the size of the post players Oak Hill have but Bre showed alot of senior leadership along with the others in the win. If they can bottle the determination they showed in that game they just may surprise some people. I think as the year progress all those young players will age quickly and make some noise. It was a great day of basketball thats for sure.

First off...tman, welcome to the prep boards. We'll be looking forward to your insight as the season begins.

I pretty much agree with your comments. I was courious as to how Freedom would fare in the final scrimmage against a taller Oak Hill squad.

    Super Saturday

Thanks to everyone who came out to watch a great day of basektball and thanks to all who helped work. I didn't get to watch a lot of ball but I know one team that looked very impressive. Hickory High School. They are going to be tough to beat this season. McDowell and Freedom looked good as well, I wonder if everyone is still picking Freedom to finish 5th? The Ford and Washington battle will be fun again this season.

You got any idea the approximate numbers of scouts that attended the scrimmage? I saw a lot of UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Lenoir-Rhyne and others checking out the action.

I don't know the total number but I was working the sign-in table till about 10:00 and there was already 19 scouts at that time. Not bad considering none of the "big name " teams -Providence Day, Oak Hill, ect....had played yet, I bet there was atleast 40 and maybe more by the time it was all done.
