    Peterson graduated last year

Sanderson's Wigmore, Gagnon, Wolfe are fine players as are Zeblo and Brown from Broughton. sanderson could make a run.

    Sanderson is . . .

. . . . the team to beat in the Cap 7. Not having Peterson will leave a big hole, though. It's amazing how far they have come in a short time.

    Sanderson defends CAP 7 title?

It is good to see other TBR members reporting on their CAP 7 team as I can not keep up with all of them. I am a Sanderson Spartans parent so I will add my two cents worth on the ’09 Spartans. I may be a “little” bias but parents are allowed to be that way.

First we lost CAP 7 POY Mark Peterson (UNCG) but we do have six starters back that have been to the state playoffs the last two years as sophomores and juniors. In 2007 they made their first state playoff appearances since 1991. In 2008, Sanderson won the CAP 7 for the first time since 1991, and they went deep into the state playoffs, reaching the 4A Eastern Regionals and losing the best of three series to the eventual (and first class) 4A State Champions Greenville Rose. Leading the Spartans is 2008 CAP 7 Coach of the Year Todd Laughlin.

Returning are nine seniors with six that were starters, P-1B Charles Wolfe (CAP 7 pitcher of the year), along with fellow CAP 7 All-Conference players C-P Max Gagnon, SS Kyle Wigmore and CF Kyle Wood. Add in fellow senior starters 2B Robert Brunson and INF-OF Travis Trumps. OF Alex Baldy, 2B Sam Beavans and P-1B John McFarling round out the returning seniors. Jr P-C Bryan Burke should also contribute.

P-1B Wolfe is an imposing 6’5” pitcher who has command of his pitches and is a solid hitter, at one time in his career hitting safely in 17 straight games. SS Wigmore (High Point recruit) is as good as they get defensively and can put the ball in play. He may also do some pitching this season. CF Wood covers the outfield like nobody else. His improved speed and ability to read the ball allows Wood to get those hits that become outs. There is no tougher out at the plate. C-P Gagnon has a canon for an arm behind the dish and hit for power last season (4 HR, 3 3B 6 2B, 26 RBI). 2B Brunson stepped it up last year and was solid in the field. OF-3B Trumps continued to get better as the season went on and was solid at RF and has some wheels.

In 2007 Leesville made it to the 4A East Regionals and Sanderson did the same in 2008. Who will it be in 2009?

There are so many quality players in the CAP 7 and I would like to hear about them. So come on Millbrook, Enloe, Wakefield, Broughton, Wake Forest-Rolesville and Leesville – let us hear about your kids.

I feel Sanderson has as good a shot as anybody to win the CAP 7 and make a third straight trip to the state playoffs.

    Go Spartans!

    PirateFan . . .

Can you share any news with us about other signings by Sanderson players besides Wigmore to High Point, especially Wolfe, Gagnon and Wood?

    Sanderson player signings

The only signed player is SS Kyle Wigmore.

There is no doubt Sanderson is the team to beat in this conference . After that it is wide open. Someone will step up and shock the others.

Who do you believe will qualify for the playoffs this year, and in what order? The top 4 qualify.

This is my best educated guess --

    1. Sanderson
    2. Millbrook
    3. Broughton
    4. Enloe
