As the calendar turns to April, it is time to start looking at team records and conference standings. Many of the leagues will be hitting their midway point this week. The number of playoff spots from each league is in the brackets (). There are three wild cards in the 4A west bracket this year.

If you can assist in updating and/or correcting a team or league it is greatly appreciated.

    Playoff Pairings

So, both teams from the Southern Carolina Conference (Porter Ridge and Sun Valley) are guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs regardless of their records? And the "#1 seed" of those 2 yeams plays a wild card team at home and the other gets a home game too? Doesn't seem quite right to me.

The #2 SCC team will be on the road. As for Porter Ridge, they are 5-9 overall, 2-7 in the conference. Sun Valley is 15-8, 5-4 in the conference. As for the two spots guaranteed, it's the product of the split conference system, and the way they determine the number of berths for each conference. (total teams divided by two, drop the decimal, add one).

I understand the system, just seems kooky when you've only got 2 4A teams in a split conference. Never mind the fact that they're facing ostensibly weaker competition by competing in a split conference. We've got a 5-9 team going to the playoffs (and not even facing a #1 seed from another conference), while other teams like Watauga, N. Meck, Myers Park, Butler, McDowell, and Davie or Ragan will be fighting it out for the 3 WC spots. I know we could go on and on about the playoff structure and rules all day, but to have a guaranteed spot from the getgo just seems over the top.
