    Andrews wins but loses Gilchrist

Andrews wins by 38-35; Gilchrist injured
By Tom Berry, High Point Enterprise Sports Writer

MAYODAN – With Craig Brooks out and cornerbacks Brian Sanders and Marcus Gilchrist going down in the second quarter, High Point Andrews played the second half without three starters in the secondary.

“We were like a one-legged horse back there,” said coach Derek Anderson.

The horse was not destroyed. The Red Raiders rallied with 17 consecutive points to start the fourth quarter and withstood McMichael 38-35 in a nonconferece thriller on Friday night.

Jasper Thomas paced Andrews (4-2) with 204 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 32 carries. Jamal Haizlip caught two touchdown passes from Jordan Reid, including an 11 yarder early in the fourth quarter that gave the Raiders their first lead at 30-28 after trailing 28-21.

“We had a lot of people injured, so we had to step up and execute as a team,” said Haizlip.

Sanders, a major college prospect, left with an ankle injury. Gilchrist, the Clemson bound star who had an interception and 52 yards rushing in the first half, suffered an apparent dislocation of his left elbow after falling during a pass pattern 19.3 seconds before halftime.

“Marcus could be out a couple of weeks or the rest of the year,” Anderson said. “It depends on the degree of the dislocation.” Before suffering an injury, Andrews’ Andre Brockman came through with two interceptions in the second half and a key tackle on fourth down. Corey McManus, with three receptions and 88 yards rushing on nine carries, scored from the 24 with 5:22 remaining to put the Raiders up 38-28.

McMichael (1-4), was led by Lamar Tatum, who scored three touchdowns and passed for two. The Phoenix led 14-0 after Andrews made turnovers on its first three possessions.

“We came out and underestimated these guys,” said Thomas.
