For HS ball, what are acceptable reasons for absence from games & practices, with no discipline, punishment or penalty?

Obviously sickness &/or deaths in the family, but what about other school events, academics, what about entirely personal stuff like a birthday trip, others?

for a personal absence, does it make a difference if the player tells you about it several weeks in advance, maybe even before the season?

just wanted to see how various coaches handle this. are there understood penalties or discipline action for unapproved absences??

Well now, interesting can of worms. retests, afterschool studing, and doctors visits are acceptable for being late with a written note from teacher. School trips are excused. but no matter what, if you dont practice the day before a game, you dont start that game. after school detention and in school detention will get you thrown off the team as well as poor grades and the standard 14.5 absents along with being tardy too many times.

family trips are given consideration, but you have to make it up somewhere. these are our guidelines. anyone else???

This was answered in the baseball forum as well. Written rules and applicable punishment are reviewed and signed by the player and their parents before the season. Even if the player receives an excused absence, there is still some consequence for missing a practice or game. But it is plainly writtrn and understood. The key to anything is the consistent implementation of the rules. If one rule and corresponding punishment is broken, then the rules aren't worth the paper it's printed on.

    specifically

I know HS teams have rules to follow on this issue & such rules are understood before season starts.
but for instance if a player comes to the coach before or early in season and provides a date for a game that she will be abscent due to an out of town personal "fun" trip, what would be your reaction as the coach? assume player is a starter.

    spin

Want to add a slightly different spin on this topic since I posted it on both the baseball & softball forums.
The spin: Would a game absence for a personal trip (requested well in advance) be perceived differently for a girl (softball) vs. a boy (baseball)?

not at my hs, both would have the same penalty for a starter missing a game, 10 poles and 4 perimeters and the loss of one start. it's looked at as an unnecessary absence or unexcused absense.

The administrator better recognize the value of the coaches and know with the acceptance of the responsibility of coaching there comes a high level of autonomy that allows the coach to use experience, judgement, and common sense to make kids and teams successful.
