Laney @ Rose: Impact's Top Two 4A Teams!

Playing in the 3rd round! Obviously, this is a match-up that would be played later in the playoffs if the teams were seeded properly.

The game tonight has a championship feel to it.

I'll be checking that game out on the Star News Blog.

The seeding is what it is. It's a completely objective way to seed the teams. Football seeds the teams 1 through 32 in the east and 1 through 32 in the West, and people complain nonstop about the biases that go into giving the teams high seeds that have a traditionally good program. I prefer the way baseball does it because there are no surprises and you know what you're going to get ahead of time.

Even in the NCAA tournament, Carolina had to beat the SEC champs and a top-15 team in the second round (LSU, an 8 seed). Then they had to beat a consensus top-10 team in the third round (Gonzaga, a 4 seed), and a team that was ranked in the top 5 all year in the fourth round (Oklahoma, a 2 seed). When it boils down to it, if you're truly the best team you'll go out and beat people whether you play them in the 3rd round or the championship game.

I'm not trying to come off as too "old school," because obviously the path that you have to go through IS a huge factor when you're trying to win a championship - it's all about matchups. But I just personally like the way baseball does it because nobody makes the actual decision to pit one team against another, it's all done by conference seeding. For that reason, I think it's the most fair way to do it.
