contact Shanna Smith at NC State she had a ACL and surgery and returned to play as well as before and I know she will be glad to share with you. Also Brea Cheney at UNCG who had a ACL injury in the fall. Both these girls are really good ball players and they can give you some insight to what's ahead. As in anything the rehab is the most important aspect to a full recovery. Good luck . Should be able to get their e-mail address of each school's web-site.

    ACL

Most common injury with females that participate in sport activity especially basketball and softball. Brooke Starnes at Lenior Rhyne would be a very good person to call, she has fought back twice from that injury. It usually takes 8-12 months to recover provided U work hard and have a great therapist. It really helps if U can build up the muscles in the leg prior to the surgery because of the atrophy that occurrs after the surgery. Recovery is better as U do not have to totally rebuilt the muscle tone. A former player of mine just tore hers playing basketball in December and is scheduled for surgery this month. Good luck! It is tough but as pointed out, there are many great players that come back to play their sport and play just as well if not better than before.

You do not have to have surgery. However, you can forget any sports, or other rigorous activity. Also problems later down the road can occur. The ACL is the KNEE STABILIZER. Also delay of treatment can cause other damage to the knee structure. That small ligament rolls like a window shade. College/pro athletes have this surgery all the time. If it didn't require surgery they would just rehab and keep right on going. The rehab is not to heal the ligament. The rehab people go through is to strengthen the legs muscles so that the post-op rehab will not require compete rebuilding of all those muscles. Contact some of the young ladies mentioned in other posts if they are near you. They can set your mind at ease and answer any questions. Most are as good as new after their surgery...some even better because the work required to get back is more than any workouts they peviously have done before their injury. Complete recovery is usually around 6 months depending on the athlete.
