No, Coach Knight was not in control of his temper. He is an extreme case and I would steer my son away from him if I had one. I am not talking about hollering and berating players...I am just talking about raising one's voice and pushing the kids.

    I've Got No Problem W/Direct Coaching !!

Yea I guess you are right he is kind of on the extreme of abusive coaching...direct coaching is acceptable...like RT said get to the point and explain the consequences of the action, correct properly, and hopefully the young athlete will learn from her mistakes. Like I said before as long as coaching is done equally to each participate then everyone will have an oportunity to either except the coaches behavior or move on ... Guru

A good example of this point....

Once when I was coaching, my assistant coach had a way of sounding incredibly scarry to the girls and they all said, "we don't like the way he talks to us, he is loud and sounds mad", my response was "quit paying attention to how he says things and start paying attention to what he says"! After explaining to the girls that people are different, not everyone talks in a monotone or quiet way! Some people are quiet and some people are loud! Some people allow the tone in their voice, to describe the importance or intensity of what they are saying!
Instead of placing your attention on the way a person is telling you something, place your attention on what the person is saying! I believe the content of the person's words should hold the most importance!
Because just because someone uses a cuss word, or being loud doesn't mean they are being verbally abusive!
For instance, my DD learned a long time ago, what a good old fashion butt chewing, in an extremely loud voice, sounds like! So for a coach to use a loud voice or tone with her, would not really phase her! I do not believe in pampering athletes! Or treating them with kid gloves, per say! This is to be age appropriate of course!
But a coach who is degrading, demeaning, disgracing, dishonoring, disrespecting or is saying things that are detrimental to the character or person in which they are speaking, none of the are acceptable behavior from a coach!

    With Coach Knight

you knew what you were getting. Just like he said in his interview the other night, the player and the parents knew who and what he was about. I would say 97% of his payers stand by him from the interviews I've seen over the years. I wouldn't of wanted to play for him or have my son play for him. But with Coach Knight, you knew what you were getting!

    I'd be proud....

...to have Bobby Knight coach my son, if I had one! If all Knight did was holler, and berate kids, he would not be the winningest coach in college history. No doubt there must be a "right way" in coaching kids. If a kid can't deal with the way a coach goes about preparing his/her team, then don't play at that school. As for determining how a coach should "express" their thoughts to one player or another is totally up to them. My DD, the oldest one, probably hated how I worked her hard at times but she is the kind of player who wanted a bloody nose here and there. My little one is the exact opposite, I will get nowhere screaming at her. I don't condone any behavior from a coach that is not done with a good reason. ....Oh, I forgot, ChaCha, is a Dean Smith man!

How many final fours or national championships has Knight won in the last 20 years? One reason he quit winning the championships is because big time players did not want to play for him once his coaching style was out in the public. Is he a great coach..no doubt about that. Is he hard to play for...yes, no doubt about that either. A good example of what I am talking about is Eric Montross. Montross was Mr. Basketball in Indiana and Knight and the whole state worked hard to get him...they didn't. Dean Smith is da man!!!!

Bobby Knight couldn't clean Dean Smith's shoes!!!!

This is a PERFECT example of just because you can doesn't mean it is right! You can't tell me that Bobby Knight was kept around for his humor and gentle, loving personality! Just because a person can win games with a group of extremely talented young individuals, does not mean that their way is the right way!
I would hope that my child, son or DD, would never wish to learn from a person who shows no respect for their character, or any respect for the treatment of other human beings!
Bobby Knight certainly does not belong in the same class as Dean Smith or Coach K! Dean Smith is a CLASS ACT and has proven it many times over! I also feel that Coach K has proven his character to be extremely solid as well! I personally have never heard that said about Bobby Knight!

    Mr. Basketball in ......

...any state is a cool award. But it don't mean squat! Just ask how many games did the Hiesman trophy winner, uhh, two time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin play in the pros. Why does Glennon, the # 3 ranked QB in the country come to NCSU instead of playing where his brother rocks? And for the final fours!!!!....you, my friend, know that if your not the champ in any given year, no one cares. All the rest are runner ups.....ok, losers! Dean is at the top of the list when we talk about coaches. Coach K is too. K has reputation of a smart cussing coach that offends some. It doesn't offend me if I were the dad of a kid playing for one of the alltime greats. JMO
