• Repeat pick went 12-3 with two saves and a 1.75 ERA. Tied for N.C. lead in wins.

P: Ryan Hinson, Rock Hill Northwestern, Sr.

• Clemson signee was 10-0 with 0.37 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 76 innings. Hit .406 with seven HRs and 20 RBIs. Drafted by Boston Red Sox in 28th round.

P: Tom Porter, North Meck, Sr.

• Was 9-2 with 0.85 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 54 innings. Threw a perfect game. Excellent fastball.

C: Daniel Cooke, Independence, Sr.

• Hit .404 with 22 steals, three HRs and 12 doubles. Strong arm. All-ME-CA 8 4A.

INF: Justin Schumer, East Meck, Jr.

• Led team in hitting (.455), runs (30), HRs (five) and RBIs (33). Perfect on 11 steal attempts.

INF: Kyle Seager, NW Cabarrus, Jr.

• Led N.C. 3A finalist with .478 batting average, eight HRs and 45 RBIs. College and pro prospect.

INF: Drew Martin, Gastonia Ashbrook, Sr.

• N.C. State signee hit nine home runs with 27 RBIs, and batted .468. Had 21 extra-base hits and scored 37 runs.

INF: Mike Cavasinni, N. Meck, Sr.

• Three-time All-Observer pick. Batted .595 with 28 steals, and became N.C. career steals leader (109).

OF: Cory Dunning, Providence, Sr.

• Louisville signee batted .440 with five HRs, 27 RBIs and a .533 on-base percentage.

OF: David Rubenstein, South Meck Sr.

• Hit .366 with 27 RBIs, 11 extra-base hits and .565 on-base percentage. Strong arm.

OF: Wilson Boyd, Hickory, Sr.

• Batted .459 with 50 hits, 14 HRs, 47 runs and 36 RBIs. Had a .962 slugging percentage, and 25 extra-base hits. School career leader in six offensive categories.

DH: Ryan Laboy, Central Cabarrus, Sr.

• High Point signee batted .524 with six HRs, 31 RBIs and 11 doubles. Twice an all-ME-CA 8 4A pick.

UTIL: Ryan Morris, South Mecklenburg, Jr.

• Hit a team-leading .437 with 29 RBIs for N.C. 4A finalist, and was 6-4 with 68 strikeouts in 59 innings. Committed to Clemson.

UTIL: Mitch Besselievre, Providence, Sr.

• Southwestern 4A co-player of the year was 8-3 with two saves, and 73 strikeouts in 73 innings. Batted .417.

• South Piedmont 3A Player of the Year was 11-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings.

Whoever picks these teams does not even have a clue. Jarod Faggart All Piedmont catcher & Ryan Query All Piedmont designated hitter??? I think that this should be the other way around. Faggart was the DH for NW. He only caught sparingly. Query on the other hand caught every nite for Kannapolis.

 

Is this a misprint? I'm guessing East Lincoln is not in Gaston County.

 

You have to remember that this award is picked by the staff of The Observer. They get feedback from coaches, but they make the selections. Perhaps The Insider can help us out

 

THe stats are the question here. And, Yes they are turned in by the coaches. the North Meck stats are a joke. Nuff said!

 

Most of us here know that HS stats are creative at best. But it's hard to argue the selections. All the guys are deserving even if the positions listed for them are unique.

In one sense, I hate awards...there are always some deserving kids missed. But it is great that the ones selected are noticed.

 

Ryan Query, Houston Summers and (unheralded) Dallas Tarleton are the three best catchers (Sr) in the State...period!
