    Hello,

I am reporting live from Rock Hill, SC. I hope to have a report for TBR viewers this evening from Game 1. NC vs. FL.

I will post the information here on TBR.

Odds are right-hander Chris Mason (former Cherryville HS standout) who played role as UNC-G's closer last spring will be starting for Cherryville.

Mason has been pitching in the 87-90 mph range with a plus breakingball most of the summer.

    Should be a good one!

Thanks Andy.....Chris Mason is the real deal!!! Arguably, the most dominant pitcher at the legion level in the State this year

Hot… The goal for me is to lose at least 1 pound per game. I feel like I could whip myself into shape by the weekend…

Two words – Chris Mason. This guy was straight dealin’. His pitch ‘velo’ was in the 86-88 mph range for the most part, He went a little lower at times and he reached 90 mph 3 or 4 times early on. Mason showed me one of the best slurveballs I have seen. It was pitched in the 76-79 mph range and it had late, hard biting action.

Not sure it’s fair for this guy to be pitching against 04 and 05 guys though? And ‘Chief” you may be right – hard to find a more dominant pitcher in NC Am. Legion. I would give the nod to Ricky Shefka (Old Dominion) who pitched for Snow Hill American Legion though. He’s about the same kind of pitcher. A little more projectable, with a bit more velocity. And even Dustin Sasser (ECU 03’ Grad) who pitched for Wayne County Am. Legion this summer. He’s a lefty in the upper 80’s. I have seen him as high as 93 mph at the State Games East/West game.

Anyway, Mason struck out everybody it seemed like. He walked a few late as he got tired. He did show excellent command of that ‘snap-dragon’ slurve. He's thrown a bunch this summer...

Cherryville shortstop Jay Heafner (Davidson College) had a nice day. He had a couple of hits in the game; one where he almost made the thirdbaseman into a ‘bobble-head’ doll. The kid about lost his noggin’. Heafner can play. He is solid and very steady up the middle.

02’ grad David Wise (W Lincoln HS) for Cherryville had two doubles and an RBI flyball in the game. Not sure if this guy is a current college player – my guess is he is.

02’ grad Brandon Hurt (Lenoir-Rhyne??) showed a big, lofty swing. He hit a bomb foul in his first at-bat (later struck out), and he made a bid for a dinger deep to the RF warning track. The kid has juice at the plate.

Shane Summer and 02’ grad broke the game open with a 2 RBI double with the bases loaded. He also singled in the game. Summer is a former Cherryville HS player. Not sure if he is a current college player?

Transition in the story… The Florida team looked to be ‘Okay.’ Their two pitchers were better than average I thought. Both were middle 80 guys. I think Cherryville will be okay if they can continue to get good outings from their starting pitchers. It looks like they are going to score a few runs and they have a superb coach in Bobby Reynolds.

Note: How many coaches win the High School State Championship and the American Legion State Championship in the same year? There's a little summer project for the kids.

What a great report! Are you going to be out there all weekend Andy?

I really like Brandon Hurt..can you imagine having to face him and Craig Gesslein in the same lineup?..you better have upped your insurance

Andy, a question for you: What are your thoughts about college players playing Legion ball? Is it good for Legion? Is it good for the participants?

Great game by Mason this morning. He actually is a former Bessemer City H. S. star (same H. S. Kevin Millwood is from). Also, pretty sure that David Wise played for Limestone this past year.

    Chief -

Personally, I do not like the college players playing American Legion. This is of course for the reason that there are less high school players on the field for me to evaluate. I know many of the college coaches I have talked to about that don't really care for college guys to be playing American Legion.

In general, from what I have gathered, college coaches don't like to put their pitchers in American Legion (potential of being over used, etc), but they like the option of putting their position guys in American Legion if they can't find them some place to play in the summer.

But hey, who am I to question? Let the baseball gurus decide that stuff. I'm just happy to be watching baseball.

And to answer your question, I will not be here all weekend. I'm heading back tomorrow.
