I would love for this thread to be updated with scores and other news about Post 46's journey in the regionals.

I'll be down at Emerald Isle Beach all week so I won't have any internet access, but hopefully the newspaper down there will have some updates.

    Good luck Post 46. :ylsuper:

    # of games

I notice that all the teams in SE regionals have played 40 - 50 or more games, but the NC & SC teams have played less than 40. why the difference?

1 reason we play less games is because of the playoff format in north Carolina we have to many teams and allow them all in the playoffs. instead of having longer regular seasons and only letting the top teams in the playoffs we may play more games if that format was used again.

Kannapolis played 43 games this year,,,, Pineville and Caldwell County played about the same. This was discussed immediately before the state tournament, because for some reason the eastern NC legion teams didn't play nearly as many games. I never heard a reason why eastern teams didn't play as much, but Morehead City's record entering the state tournament was 19-4, compared to our 31-8.

Whatever the reason for the fewer number of games, its not an entire NC thing,,,, it seems to just be an eastern NC thing, specifically Area 1.

There is a simple explanation for the more southern states like Florida or Alabama. You see, weather is the key factor.

For example in Florida, baseball season (for high schools) opens February 12. The State playoffs begin April 23rd & the Finals are May 14.

Also school dismisses well before Memorial Day (in my former hometown Clearwater Florida...school next May dismisses May 18). Never a weather delay unless a late summer hurricane intervenes.

So Legion season begins as much as 2 weeks earlier. That translates into 10 games or more.

    OK

I'd say that a reason for less A.L. games in eastern NC is honestly that the east is not as "gung-ho" about Legion ball as the Kannapolis, Caldwell, Pineville, etc. Don't you central & western guys schedule lots of intersectional matchups with teams from a fairly vast region & maybe schedule what could be considered "extra" games a bit beyond the norm?
This is not intended to be negative or positive about either extreme, just seems to be a fact.

I know in my county - Johnston - in 2005 and some years before, had 3 legion teams, in 2006 there were 2 legion teams with Smithfield opting out of legion to go to that new summer HS league.

I recall the days when Johnston only had one team (& Johnston's a large county) & you just had that feeling about that type of team ; it represented the best of the best in the county each summer & had a chance to advance. This is no longer the case. Johnston's a very high growth area, so it is giving more kids the legion experience, but I just cannot honestly see a team from Johnston achieving high levels in legion ball.

& thanks UK7Dook3 for the first-hand knowledge about the comparison of the # of games by teams at the SE regional. I would say that the # of games could effect a team either way in a regional; it still depends on what happens between the lines. teams get on a roll & you can toss out the record book, as they say.

EastofRaleigh,,,, I didn't mean my post as a slam against eastern teams, in fact this question has already come up before the state tournament as to why several eastern teams didn't have many games played. If you followed Boxman's rankings any during the regular season, this question was asked many times,,, why did western teams have 30 games and eastern teams were in the teens? Personally I never heard much of a reason and I just figured the eastern teams had a lot of bad weather in which games were cancelled or postponed.

To answer your question, yes many teams in my immediate area (Area 3) usually schedule 4-5 nonleague games (some more, some less). Add that number to the number of league games which is 20 in Area 3's southern division, and this season we had played a total 24 games before the playoffs started.

I realize sometimes due to HS teams going deep in the HS playoffs its very difficult to schedule many (if any) nonleague legion games,,,, we ran into that in 2005 with no nonleague games because of that reason.

Btw,,,,, if the east isn't so gung-ho about legion ball, then maybe us westerners should take note,,,,, afterall the last 2 state champions have come from the east, so whatever it is,,,, its working...
