BRISTOL, Conn. -- In the wake of Anderson softball's stellar 2010 season, third baseman Emily Monteith and senior shortstop Meredith Knox have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District softball first-team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday afternoon.

Monteith, a native of Clover, S.C., sports a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is majoring in Kinesiology. The 5-6 junior was named second–team all-conference and earned Conference Carolinas’ Player of the Week accolades during the season. She also earned academic all-conference recognition earlier this year and was an NFCA Scholar Athlete. Monteith ranked second in the conference in home runs and RBI, tied for second in total bases and was sixth in the league in runs scored.

Knox, a senior from Washington, N.C., carried a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in theology and religion. She was named an NFCA Scholar Athlete earlier this year and also earned academic all-conference honors. The 5-foot-9 shortstop garnered first–team all-conference recognition and was named to the Conference Carolinas’ all-tournament team following a season that saw her rank in the top 10 in the conference in six offensive categories, including doubles, batting avg., home runs, hits, slugging pct. and on-base percentage. She posted hitting streaks of 11-games, five-games and four-games during the season.

In order to earn recognition, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution and are voted upon by CoSIDA members. They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at their respective institution.

As first-team all-district selections, Knox and Monteith are eligible for consideration nationally as an academic All-American. District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
