    Scorekeepers Choice

Sacrifice means giving yourself up. I personally do not award sac flies for my team. I never sent a girl up there and said "hey pop one up to the outfield" If they were that good I'd say "hey hit a home run so we can score a lot" But everyone has their way of doing it. So be it. If you felt like it was a fielders choice or a sac then score it that way.

As for the scorekeepers daughter comment, I don't have any children so I can't speak on that, but they are all mine since I coach them and their parents extend them to me. My score keeper and assistant coach has a kid that plays for me. We play it straight. Anytime there is a doubt he will ask me or we will even go as far as asking the other team how they scored it after that inning, especially if they are the home team, since that book is the official book. Even that can be somewhat controversial as well.

In my experience most of the scorekeepers are very much like you describe. I haven't seen any who intentionally lie. Even the experts on this board don't seem to have all the answers. If a mistake is made let it be made in favor of the kid. As long as there is a reasonable effort at accuracy where is the harm?

    From the NFHS Rulebook:

In your scenario, the batter has the intent to get a hit. She did not have the intent to "sacrifice" herself.

Now here is where I am going to get into trouble......In this day of "dumbing down" and "feel good" society, we want to give someone they didn't work hard enough for. The rulebook is there for a reason but people want to say "Well, she tried really hard but still failed to get a hit, so we will just say that that was not an official at bat." Sorry, have the girl work harder on her hitting skills and then she will succeed and get her just rewards.

We played a game the other day when an opposing player hit a nice shot to Left center. She easily had a double. But, our CF made a throwing error that allowed the runner to reach 3rd base and then our 3rd baseman had a throwing error that allowed the runner to score. In the newspaper the next day, that team reported it as a home run (plus they still reported our 2 errors). They were fodder on the local forum that day.

Sorry for ranting...but it is just my opinion.

    Hey Sting !!

I believe you are 100% right...I only know of two reasons for a sac awarded...on a fly ball that scores a runner or a bunt to move the runner successfully !!

    OK

If we use this approach a ground ball to second with runner on second that goes to third would be a sac as well, guys there would be .500 hitters all over the place that were truly hitting .150.
Look hitting the ball behind the runner is something we all believe is key to winning but it does not make it a sac or a hit but does mean a kid is working hard to do the best for team! Praising the kid and letting the team know she did the right thing is key. LOl

For there to be a SAC there has to be INTENT to give yourself up to advance a runner... what actually happens is irrelevant. Its the difference between squaring around and dropping a bunt or drag bunting or swinging away. The batter INTENDED to make an out at first base. I guess this is why the SAC Fly goes against OBP... logic along the same lines.

A good coach will keep some type of stat giving credit to a kid who advances a runner by hitting behind them.

I fully comply with you and have never practice this with any of my teams score keeping...It just caught me off guard a week ago and was wondering if anyone else practiced this .

Also when I spoke with this particular player(s) , the run had to score.- They might of left several details out...I never really dwelled on it. Once again, this was practiced by a DIV.II college and my curiosity got to me after thinking about it...I thought I'd post it and see what the crew from TBR thought.
