This happened in a high school conference tournament game today. Batter hits a homerun...right before she touches home plate her team's bat boy gives her a high five..umpire does not give her the homerun and does not call her out...he sends her back to third base.

I am not sure about high school, but the NCAA rule book states that a warning is issued the first time this occurs and the homerun stands. If it happens a second time the batter is out, but is credited with hitting a triple.

Perhaps someone can tell us if the umpire's interpretation of the rule was the correct call for high school.

While I can't quote the rule, IMHO, there should have been no call at all. This just happens to be my high school team. Actually the umpire credited the batter with a triple and did call her out. IMHO, and I will try to be very carefull here, the umpire took it upon himself to take the attention away from the player who hit the homerun( her 24th career by the way ) and put it on himself. Maybe someone can clarify the rule for me, but if he was goming to call her out for being assisted by the bat boy, then why didn't he call her out when I gave her a high five going around 1st base or when the head coach high fived her rounding 3rd. Just another ump thinking he is bigger than the game ( IMHO ).

    TERRIBLE CALL!

A HR is a dead ball. Meaning, no plays may be made while the batter-runner rounds the bases. This is why the coaches are allowed to high-five the B-R as they round 1st/3rd. If the ball is live; a coach high-fiving a player is coaches interference. But since the ball was hit over the fence this is a dead-ball situation coaches/bat shaggers may high-five the player without penalty. A HR is listed under "Dead Ball Immediately" on the Dead Ball Table (#11, page 47) in the 2008 NFHS Rules Book. So, how could this be assisting a runner if the ball is dead?

I know in college they clear a path to get to the plate and no one can touch the batter until they touch the plate. Maybe its so the umpire can get a clear view of the plate to make sure they touch it before going into the dugout. If the rule wasn't in place the girls would be gathered all around the plate and he couldn't see it. I don't know just a different perspective.

    Morgan Barbours 24th HR....

.....sailed over the fence in the Greater Neuse Conf. tourn semi-final game today, as she rounded third and headed home, the batboy, a couple of feet up the line from homeplate, reaches out with a high five or handslap and BAM! the ump called Morgan out! I knew rules in HS are far fetched at times but this one takes the cake!!!!!

    Bad call

Dead ball ruling as LSSU57 stated aside, blue should have at least given a warning. What is it hurting for the bat boy to congratulate her before she gets to home? Sometimes the bat boys or team managers get more excited than the girls especially if it is the first HR they have seen.

What is even worse is it robbed her of her 24th career HR, just two shy of Landon's record. Hope she gets the chance to knock a couple more out!

    I posted a new thread.....

......reporting this same odd play on "Morgan Barbours 24th HR". Sorry, I was so irritated about that call, rule or not, that I posted before having read ChaChas thread. The mods can move or delete my thread.

    Sorry for the confusion....

....but this odd play has already reached TBR in ChaChas "you make the call". The mods will take care of my mistake.

I was told they just sent her back to third...my bad. The rule in the NCAA is that a warning is issued first and the next time it happens, after the warning is issued, the batter would be out and credited with a triple. I know for a fact the NCAA rule book states this, but have no idea about the NC high school rule book. Now, if the umpire was following the NC high school rule to a tee...no problems from me.

I was there at that tournament, that was an utter ridiculous call, blue just wanted to cause a spectacle, that's all.
