The artificial turf is in the fieldhouse in-door practice area only.....

It's similar to what they have down at USC, I'd bet. An 80x60 yard indoor facility could be used by multiple sports during bad weather.

My understanding is that the new baseball field itself will have artificial turf. The same kind that's on the football field now. In fact there may not be any dirt around the bases - completely artificial in the infield, outfield and foul territory. Only the pitchers mound will be dirt. They want to be able to play games shortly after it snows or rains.

From what I understand there will be dirt at the mound, bases and plate - but I may have bad information.

Still it will be a top-notch facility.

Can someone post a detailed fall report on the Mountaineers? How did all the '05 boys do? Who are the leaders of this team this year? Who stood out in the fall?

    Field Turf Everywhere

Louisville has the Field Turf everywhere. The only two dirt spots on the whole field are the mound and the plate. They painted the infield turf brown to give it a more natural look. See this link:

I saw a game played after the stadium opened and it played very true. There were not any high choppers and the speed of the ball through the infield was not abnormally fast. As far as sliding, the turf plays natural with the rubber base (it's not like sliding on the old concrete). The only problem seemed to be with the players stopping when the turf was moist (a little like a slip and slide).

Washington St has this also. I have heard of some teams looking at putting the field turf in the batter's box as well... we'll see.
