Secret to hs ball is really no secret. most girls just want to have fun with their friends. the last three years we have started out with 60+ girls and used to limit it to 12 on varsity and 12 on jv. but we've found that girls will not concentrate on grades, miss too much school and at the end of the season, we're hurting for players, so we expanded it to 27 players and 3 managers in reserve. but what i've really noticed is that one girl can be the group leader for several girls and they all follow her lead. getting that one girl to play ball is the secret....this usually is a group of athletics who can play anything. this year, this group is my outfield players and after basketball, they'll be there......i hope....but really, when your players realize that you're out there for them, and not you, when they realize that you have respect for them and actually listen to them, its an experience that some dont have in their life yet and a bond is formed that lasts a lifetime.....other girls see this and they want to be a part of it also.

the key is developing a youth feeder program.. just getting bodies out there wont work.... 2 years ago we had a JV team that had 2 players with any experience .. 7 with their first glove! The first question: have you ever played softball before? Answer: yes , at church! lol I coached a team like that. Its not what you want.

you're right there buddy, we decided to go back to the middle school programs that feed our hs and help with their programs. we encouraged middle schoolers to play rec, dixie youth, travel ball, anything to give them experience. as far as the first glove things, we donated 15 gloves last year to our middle school programs. you have to start somewhere and this is where it counts for high school programs.

I think if softball has a strong following at the rec and TB level in the area the HS will have many more girls to choose from. we have 35+ and most are TB players and thre rest come from Rec programs. We would probably have more at tryouts but alot of girls say they dont come out because they dont feel they can compete. Lsat year we cut 14 girls and at least half of them could most likely been starters at other HS programs. And that is attributed to the strong rec and TB programs and coaches that feed our schools.
