this is from this mornings paper regarding the series...

    Legion playoff game rained out

Friday night's American Legion baseball playoff game at Hardee Field was rained out. Wilmington Post 10 was supposed to be the home team for the second and fourth games of the best-of-five series, but a schedule conflict is changing the order of the sites.

The Wilmington Sharks play a home game today at 6 p.m. at Hardee, so the second game of the series will be tonight at 7 at West Carteret High School, the home field of Morehead City Post 46. Games 3 and 4 will be played at Hardee Field. Sunday's game starts at 6 p.m., and Monday's, if necessary, starts at 7.

Post 10 can't solve bullpen of Post 46

    By Tim Hower,

Morehead Post 46 won a battle of the bullpens and took control of its American Legion baseball Area II East championship series against Wilmington Post 10.

Tyler Brownlow pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out nine, to lead Post 46 to an 8-6 victory on Sunday night at Buck Hardee Field.

Brandon Johnston doubled home the winning two runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 6-6 tie.

With the victory, Post 46 takes a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series and can end the series with a victory in Wilmington tonight at 7.

"We are not disappointed," Post 10 coach Scott Sandlin said. "We feel like we should be up 2-1, but we will come back tomorrow and try to even this thing up and have game five up there with (pitchers) Brad (Mincey) and Justin (Hyde) ready to go and see what happens."

Post 10, which has handed Post 46 both its losses this season, trailed 3-0 and had failed to produce a hit until the third inning.

Six hits and 11 batters later, Wilmington led 6-3.

Jon Childs led off the inning with a line-drive single to left field. Ryan LaGrange followed with a base hit of his own. Bud Lanier then doubled home Child for Post 10's first run.

With runners on second and third and nobody out, Ryan Miller laced a single through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 3-3.

Mincey and Allen King both reached to load the bases for Lynwood Graham, who doubled home two more runs. King scored the final run on a wild pitch.

"We had a big third inning and we were looking pretty good, but from then on we went into a little funk offensively," Sandlin said. "We just didn't hit the ball very well and I think Tyler had a lot to do with that.

"He had us on our heels and the attacking style we've had all year long and in the first two games of the series just seemed to go away."

Post 46 responded with three runs of its own in the top of the fourth.

Post 10 reliever Matt Rowley, who recorded the final out of the fourth inning, worked out of jams in the fifth and sixth innings.

Morehead had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but Rowley got Michael Robertson to ground out without allowing the run to score. Grant Kelley then ended the inning with a groundout to Miller at shortstop.

The next inning, Rowley got Trey Fulcher to ground out and strand runners on second and third.

"Matt did a great job, he did everything he had to do to keep us in the game," Sandlin said.

The game remained tied until the eighth.

Matt Martin laced a one-out single to right and advanced to second when Lonnie Chisenhall drew a walk two batters later.

Rowley was one strike away from escaping another jam, but Johnston drilled a 1-2 fastball to the wall in right-center.

    Post 46 wins series

Defending state champs knock out Post 10

    By Tim Hower,
    Star-News Correspondent

    </SPAN>

For the third consecutive season, Morehead Post 46 ended the season of their rivals to the south, Wilmington Post 10.

For the second night in a row Post 46 went to its bullpen early, and for the second night in a row the bullpendelivered.

Matt Martin and Lonnie Chisenhall combined to pitch 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, to lift Post 46 to a 7-4 victory and claim the American Legion Area II East championship series 3-1 on Monday night at Buck Hardee field.

"It was a tough series," Post 46 coach Robbie Lasater said. "They hit the ball a whole lot better than I thought they would after the first time we played them this year.

"The second time we played them they didn't come out stroking it, but they played us tight like they always do and I was like if we play them in the second round it's going to be a tough series."

Morehead advances to play Area II West champion Scotland County for a berth in the state championship series.

"Can we win it? Yeah we could win it," Lasater said, "but it isn't the best team at the state tournament that wins it.

"It's the team that's playing their best when they get there, it's the team that comes together and it's the team that believes in themselves and pulls together."

Post 10 struck for a pair of runs in the second inning when Ryan Gause singled home Brad Mincey and Lynwood Graham.

Morehead responded like defending state champions do, scoring three runs in the third to take the lead.

Grant Kelley led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Martin.

C.J. Fallin drove in Kelley with a single to left field.

With Martin attempting to steal, Post 10 catcher Hardee Rickenbacker overthrew third base, allowing the second run of the inning to score.

Fallin moved to third on the throwing error and scored on a bunt single by Brandon Johnson.

Wilmington tried to rally in the seventh inning.

Bud Lanier led off with a solo home run off Chisenhall to cut the lead to 6-4.

Ryan Miller reached on an error and pinch hitter Brian Jordan just missed tying the game. Jordan drilled the second pitch he saw to straightaway center, but missed hitting a home run by a few feet.

Post 10 starter Jon Child pitched seven innings, allowing five runs and striking out six.

"That's the second night in a row we had somebody go to the mound and do a good enough job to keep us in the game," Post 10 coach Scott Sandlin said. "In the four games the run difference was three runs. They beat us by one, we beat them by three and they beat us by two, so it was even coming into tonight.

"We feel like we stood toe-to-toe with the best in the state and it would be hard for me to believe there are five better legion teams in the state. Unfortunately two of the best had to play for the area final."
